# Combinations Problem watch

1. In how many ways can four toys be put into three boxes?

My approach has been to list the possibilities going from 4-0-0 to 3-1-0 through to the final 0-0-4, and my answer is 15.

Unfortunately the answer in the back of the book is 81, which implies maybe 3^4.

But that is far higher - am I going wrong? Is there something I am missing?
2. I think i've got it - three boxex, each toy can be in each: so 3 for the first toy, and three for the second and three for the third and three for the fourth - 3x3x3x3 equals 81 - different toys and each can be in one of 3 boxes.

I think my 15 ways is if they are identical.
