Sinusitis - any recommendations?

Heya all - having had yet another bout of the evil cold that is going around at the moment I seem to have developed Sinusitis (maxillary sinusitis acording to where to pain is, and my medical student friend :P ).

The pain is across the top of my left eye, all across my left cheek and into the left hand side of my jaw.

Anyone know how to take the pain away for a while? I've taken decongestants and some ibruprofen to try and take down the swelling, but it still feels like someone's hit me in my face! My cheek is all puffy :frown:

I know this isn't very helpful but I've had sinusitis since last April and nothing gets rid of it and my doctor just gave me antibiotics which obviously didn't work. I think he thought I was making it up.

Try everything that's on the market if it doesn't work you'll just have to live with it!

I find I only have a mild headache most days but I seem to get an attack with a raging headache about once every two weeks

With any luck you've just got an acute bout that will clear up after a week or so.

I know there's a few operations that they can perform to get rid of the swelling and open the sinuses up again, but I don't know anything about them!

I figure if mine hasn't gone away by the end of the week I'll go to the Dr's for a checkup.

If you do, PM me with what they tell you!

Cold/'Flu rememdies containing paracetamol and phenylephrine or pseudoephedrine, ensure you're taking a full dose and combine that with a full dose of either asprin or ibuprofen. If it doesn't go away, to the doctor with you!

Sorry to hijack, but what should one say to the doctor to make them believe you?

I'm taking sudofed at the moment, which has pseudoephedrine and paracetamol in, and full strength ibruprofen. Neither seems to be having much of an effect though :s-smilie: Drinking lots of tea and hot blackcurrent cordial at the moment too.

Chances are, if you've had it a long while its gonna need a good looking at - it might not be an infection. It could be a nasal polyp thats grown in a really inconvient place or something. Go back to your doctor and explain the situation to them, I'm sure they'll suggest something to try and figure out what's going on.

Maybe in a month or two, I've just been twice for cystitis, don't want to waste too much of their time.

As Pixiepeep says, your doctor is being unreasonable if they just write you off as making it up. I know it can be hard though, my mum kept coming back from the doctor in tears for weeks a couple of years ago, because he was convinced that she was making up her acute tendonitis and root canal infection  She just demanded to see a different doctor in the end and it was fine.

I don't want to go back too soon after my cystitus, don't want them to think I'm a hypochondriac or they are even less likely to listen!

Try: Bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapple, breaks down mucus, fights infections and relieves the symptoms of sinusitis. In a double-blind trial, 87 per cent of patients who took it reported good or excellent results (Headache, 7: 13-17, 1967). In another reported study, bromelain apparently resolved sinus infections in 85 per cent of patients after nine days of treatment, whereas antibiotics only had a 52 per cent success rate (Traditional Wisdom, 2002 on www.healthyhealing.com). The recommended dosage is 1,500mg of bromelain a day.

Interesting, but in theory it would have to be inhaled. If you swallow an enzyme then it's just going to get digested by the proteases in your stomach. There are however plenty of other drugs which are good mucolytics, like NAC, which you can ask your doctor about. Problem is that sinusitis isn't caused by mucus build up, it's inflammation.

Mine seems to be going away (yaaaay) still have horrible jaw ache though, which is really bugging me. No painkillers have helped at all throughout all of it, coughing has been agony and the horrible taste in my mouth has made me feel worse! But it seems to be subsiding. I just pray I don't ever get it ever again!

Talya, I hope you manage to get it sorted! And if you're doctor doesn't listen then see someone else. Good luck

If the pain is really severe, try something heftier, like voltarol (diclofenac). IIRC, you can get a formulation available over the counter, but you can get it prescribed by your doctor. Be warned, it is a little harsh to the stomach, so should always be taken on a full stomach!

Pardon my ignorance, but why would an protease enzyme digested by another protease like.. um pepsin?
