What do you all say about that? Is it true that girls mature more quickly than boys, both physically and mentally? Well somehow many ppl use this formula to disagree with a relationship where the boy is younger than the girl.. Is it always that way, though?

Thanx.

I wouldn't say it's a problem in a relationship - my girlfriend's a year older than me, and we get on fine in mental interests/discussions, etc. I'd imagine that some girls mature more quickly, and of course vice versa, that some boys mature more quickly. But relationship-wise, it's not a problem

In my opinion it doesn't matter in the slightest. It's a mistake to pay too much attention to social 'norms'; if two people are happy together then there's no problem.

Unless one of them is under sixteen.

My last boyfriend was 18 months younger than me. The fact that he was younger didn't make a difference, and nobody ever said anything to us about it being strange at all.

But what if they are happy together and one is under sixteen? It is a social "norm" that dictates the law (i.e. under it is illegal for an under 16 to have sex with an over 16 etc), so your post is a bit of a contradiction.

Careful there, Jim.

That statement would only apply - pertaining to legal matters - if the question concerned having sex, rather than what it is - being in a relationship.

Fair point. However I'd be very concerned if anyone aged 19+ was going out with a 15-year-old at all. With 17-18 year-olds there's a grey area (morally, not with the law!)

that's not a regular relationship then???

how old is he and how old are you, i think it matters less if the guy is young to be honest...

I think more than a year or two younger is a bit odd, at our age (assuming you're about 17-19, average age here I guess), but if you're happy then it's fine. My boyfriend is 9 months younger than me, and is in the year below me at college, which I've had lighthearted joking about but as far as I know, no one actually thinks it's strange, haha.

I don't think there's anything wrong with it... but I wouldn't date a younger guy personally, at this stage in my life.

Am I incorrect in the belief that there isn't a male age of consent, so a relationship with a 15 yr old male and a female over 16 wouldn't have any legal issues?
I'm sure I heard that somewhere. On a documentary about female teachers sleeping with their young students infact.

I'm surprised at the responses here so far. I'm sure a similar thread to this a while back got responses like "I'd never consider dating a guy my own age, he has to be at least a year older".

Yeah I think that's true.....

Erm, no it's not. Not at all. The law says that you cannot have sex with someone under 16. Nothing about gender is stipulated...

Yes, I'd be very concerned if there were no laws protecting under-16 males! There are, however, different laws for 0-13 and 13+ I think. Sexual relations with individuals in the first category are indefensible, whereas it is less distinct whether sex between 15 and 16 year-olds should be prosecuted, for example (typically, of course, it wouldn't).

Fair enough, my bad. I thought it was pretty shocking when I heard it, so I carried on watching hoping they'd clarify. I suppose I heard/remember wrong.

I think this used to be the law - I remember being told in PSHE in year 9 (about five years ago - & the only time I ever learnt something new and interesting in PSHE!) but then I think it was changed a couple of years back to make it equal.

I've never gone out with anyone younger than me, and I don't know how I'd feel about it because my brother is in the school year below me so it would be a bit strange, but who knows?
