Hey, so I'm about to start Grade 11 IB Diploma, and this is my choice of subjects so far:
Physics HL, Chemistry HL, English HL, Maths SL, Geography SL, Chinese B SL
At first I requested for Maths HL but it is not confirmed yet, so these are my current subjects. I am planning to become an engineer in the future (probably biomedical or mechanical) and I know the need of Maths HL to get accepted in a top university. I took Additional Mathematics for my GCSE earlier this year and got an A (82%) for that. So my previous teacher said I am capable of Maths HL despite how I had a lot of difficulties with Addmaths in the past (I failed my first exam, with a total of 55% including classwork/coursework). I did eventually enjoy the subject once I figured out how to solve the problems, though. But now that I'm in a new school, I need to take an exam to determine if I can really do Maths HL.
So should I be qualified for the class, I will change my English to SL and I have to take History SL instead of Geo. Now I am a bit left behind in History and I didn't take that subject for my GCSE, but as for Geography, I heard it's a pretty light subject and I would be in the same level with my classmates as the subject is not offered in the previous grades in the school I'm going to.
Therefore technically, if I take Maths SL, my IB life will be considerable way easier. My dad believes it's better to get a high IB overall score with that than getting a low one with a lot of difficulties. Out of the 130 Grade 11 IB students in my school, only 23 take HL so far (maybe the qualifying exam is really hard?) so I'm thinking probably not all of the students planning to become an engineer are taking Maths HL. My coordinator also told me it is not necessary as it is an extremely intensive subject, and that their graduates have been accepted in universities with Maths SL.
What should I do?
