Communists under Stalin - AKA Stalinsts? Yes, in my opinion they did. To even call the system of government ruled by the USSR Communist in my opinion is not remotely communist at all. Communism describes the rise of the proleteriat and the destruction of all class warfare. Yet under the 'stage of socialism', who was ruling? The proleteriat? Nope... of course it was Stalin. So in terms of after the October revolution and his rise to power after the death of Lenin, I would tend to agree that they deserved the title Red Tsars. Yet the Tsars were autocratic, the regime put in place after 1930s was totalitarian! Autocracy involves the rule of a party under the state of law, but totalitarian regimes push and defy laws. Perhaps this could be argued against your question, I don't know.
Personally I have not really studied Russia before 1917, but I have a bit of background knowledge. If this question is argued to the ideology of communism, I would most certainly say no.
