I'm a teenage girl and I just read somewhere that females aren't suppose to wash their vaginas with soap as this disturbs our ph balance and increases the risk of thrush and other infections, and that instead we should wash with warm water only. I read somewhere that some women even use honey and natural yoghurt down there!
I've been washing my vagina with soap for as long as I can remember. I use femfresh. I couldn't bring myself to using just water only, I'm curious to know how girls wash their genital area? Am I the only one who uses soap? I've had a UTI before but I don't think there's a link between a UTI and using soap down there?

I also heard that the vagina and the inside of our mouths are structured similarly, and that we brush our teeth and use mouthwash but we don't clean the inside of our mouths with soap so we should treat our vaginas the same? I know douching is a no no and I don't use soap right up my vagina, but I do apply soap inside the lips (not sure the technical name)

Sorry for rambling, can anyone shed some light? And how do you girls (guys feel free to answer) wash your genitals???

I use soap and have never had any problems.

I thought that the "no soap" rule was just for inside? I'd never put anything other than tampons (and my boyfriend... ) up there - I think that's where it's sensitive to the PH balance.

I don't know what people mean by 'inside'. Is it the vagina lips?

If youve always washed with soaps then its fine. If you change to a different brand or scented ones that u may be allergic/sensitive to, then yes it can cause irritation, not necessarily thrush. People get confused with irritation and thrush. When they refer to inside, its the vaginal canal, where u would insert a tampon. Thats where thrush is going to develop cos its a warm moist environment. So wash outside, but dont be sticking ur finger to wash inside.
