Why do Sunderland have a bigger stadium than Chelsea? Did they always have more fans before abramovich took over Chelsea that is why Sunderland have a 48,000 approx capacity stadium whereas Chelsea have a 42,000 approx capacity stadium. I know redevelopment is in the works and there was a plan to build a 55,000 capacity stadium elsewhere shortly after abramovich took over though it is still surprising Sunderland have a bigger fan base though maybe Sunderland have a bigger catchment area though it is surprising that many fans who started supporting Chelsea after 2003 have meant that Chelsea have not yet expanded Stamford bridge sooner or built a new stadium sooner.

Well Chelsea were only formed in 2003 so it'll take them a while to catch up to some of the bigger clubs with history

It was built in 1997 (up north where it is cheaper and there is more land) with 42k capacity which can be expanded up to 66k seats.

A lot of stadiums struggle because they occupy expensive land or are built around making it difficult to expand.

Sunderland are a one club city, theres 4 in West London alone.

Their capacity is 48,000 with average attendances at 5,000 less at 43,000. Our capacity is 42,000 and average capacity at over 41,500, plus theirs drop to around half that, firstly when the opposition score and they all leave, and secondly when they have job centre interviews or have to go to the dole office.

Wouldn't be surprised if their tickets were cheaper too.

Cheaper up north, more space, fewer other teams around, nothing else to do - it's how Darlington managed to get a 30k stadium despite being league two

So the fact they can't get anywhere near filling their stadium is a tad embarrasing.

The irony of this post. If you don't like what I think, use the ignore button, rather than whinging - it's there for a reason.

This is so accurate  I don't understand that mentality of leaving early, the only time i've ever left a game early is when I had no choice (e.g making the last train home). Best example of this has to be:

Because Northerners are poor so you can buy land and hire workers much more cheaply than in London.

In general Northern football teams are historically good because back before oil money, clubs got their revenues from selling tickets and watching football (along with hard drinking) was the only thing to do after a hard days work down the coal mines or in the cotton mills.
