    In my fourth day of A levels I've hit a snag. I've had this explained to me step by step but I still don't understand it.

    Rationalise and Simplify the following:
    √12
    ------
    √48

    First step:
    √12
    ------
    2 √12

    Second step (and answer):

    1
    ----
    2

    Firstly, how does √48 = 2 √12 and secondly, how is the answer 1/2 ?

    This just extremely confused me. Please explain in layman's terms. Thank you.

    What can you do to something of the form \sqrt {ab}?

    \sqrt{48} = \sqrt{4 \times 12} = \sqrt4 \sqrt{12} = 2 \sqrt{12}

    The final step is a simple cancellation.
