Im sure many people have done it before but is it smart to have a part time job during the first year of medicine?

If you've done it, how did you cope?

From what I hear from current medics, part time jobs are not advisable; but some do have jobs for the first 2 years or so.
You are better off doing just summer jobs

Summer jobs are more highly recommended, you can easily make a few grand in the summer and that can help you through the year. You can make it work, but they are not advised with intense courses like medicine.
