Respiration is needed for aerobic exercise as a source of energy. Respiration needs oxygen and produces carbon dioxide as a waste. The more energy needed, the more respiration done in your cells, the more co2 that is produced. Both of these are carried through the blood. Your pulse increases to allow your muscles to take in more oxygen and to deposit more co2 in your blood.
