Mechanical engineering vs aerospace???!

from young age i wanted to build planes and i love to design and build uavs and aircraft and so i thought about mechanical engineering but the job opportunities are really small so i was thinking can i study mechanical and become and aerospace engineer by specialising in certain aspects of mechanics and i want to do a PHD in engineering please help im in sixth form and i have to pick a course as son

It's too early to be thinking about a PhD. Pick either mechanical or aerospace, they're both quite similar, study hard to get the required grades, then get stuck in with the degree and see what it is that you like doing.

The job opportunities for mechanical engineering isn't small. There's actually a lot of engineers needed that people think! With that said, if you want to build/design planes then an aerospace/aeronautical engineering course will be the best. I don't recommend doing a mechanical engineering degree then specialising in aerospace route because whiles you are learning about how a plane wing works in your third year, you could be doing advanced CFD/aerodynamics had you chosen a straight aerospace course. Also PhD is not really necessary, unless if you want to go into research and alike. Unlike other fields, in engineering experience is required more than anything, so you're better off getting a job after masters. Anyway this is not the time to talk about PhD, try and do well in sixth form.

I'd say go with aerospace; if you're certain it's the industry you want to work in then it's a no-brainer. You'll study a number of modules which the mechanical engineers probably won't have access to (aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aircraft structures and more than likely an aircraft design project, for example).

Good on you for aspiring to do a PhD - even if it's not necessarily relevant to getting a job, some people do them for the challenge!
