Stuttering problem :(

Hi... I have had this problem since forever. I only have the problem in situations where I dont feel comfortable in e.g presentations, interviews and talking to some new people. I am at uni now and its important not to do this.
My speech is fluent when talking to my friends, etc...
It just gets so bad, I forget what to say and start repeating some words again and freeze for a second... its embrassing -
What can I do to help?
I have this exact thing. Have always had a stuttering problem. I have had speech therapy & it has helped a bit.

But like u i'm fine in relaxed surroundings, just interviews, speeches etc where my speech goes haywire. I've failed interviews purely on my speech.

Have u ever considered speech therapy ? Also make sure that u speak slowly and don't rush ur words.

I had Speech Therapy whilst i was at school. (now on my Gap Year) not sure how much it cost. Parents paid for it.

I'm sure ur Uni will be able to help u out

I get like that when in a heightened state...nerves? I can talk well if I'm clam but if something makes me a bit nervous I start to either stutter or say the wrong words every few words, it does annoy me but it's nothing that bothers me too much, as people do seem to understand that I clearly am nervous or in a heightened state where things don't seem to click for me, even when I'm thinking about the exact words to use they still come out wrong.

I've had problems with learning language all my live I've had help for it for year in primary/high school and I got to a standard of learning that my peers were at and they told me I'll be able to cope, which in the main I have, although some things still remain, I'd love to know if I have some form of learn disability however every time dyslexia is mentioned they just say no you don't have it without testing me, I keep meaning to speak to someone at uni about it but I never find the time to, I'd love to be tested see if there's something wrong and find ways to help it.

I have dyslexia. But it isn't connected to my speech difficulty.
When I was about 8-10 I had quite a bad stuttering problem, though the letters I got stuck on tended to be 'l', 'w', 'y', 'n' or 'm' rather than the more stereotypical 'b', 't' etc. Or, I'd open my mouth to say something but nothing at all would come out however much I tried. It got much better after that, but even now, if I get very excited I still stammer a little on some letters. I caught myself doing it with a word beginning with 'l' only yesterday.

I have trouble with letters, 's' 'b' & 'l'.

Hey hey, apologies if I'm bumping a dead thread.

I know exactly where you're coming from; I myself suffer from a pretty severe stammer in certain situations, and I know how humiliating/disabling it can be. There are all sorts of things that you could try, countless self-help books to read and speech therapy specialists, but I wonder if I could suggest something else...

Check out www.starfishproject.co.uk. It's a weird name, and the course itself would probably sound weird if I tried explaining it to you...! Basically, through the technique that I learned at the course, I am able to control my stammer. Sure, it's still there - there isn't any cure, but it is possible through this technique to deprive the stammer its chance to appear.

Seriously, check it out!

I'm a stammerer. Tried speech therapy - didn't work for me. Tried hypnosis - worked minimally. Now I'm going to try sing therapy. I'm getting quite desperate to be honest, because I stammer in all situations, even with close friends...

i used 2 have a stutter. it was either wen i was too eager to get somehting out that id try n speak too fast and just end up in a stuttering mess, or yeh when i was nervous. havnt had it for a while now tho, i think its one of those things you grow out of. if not, maybe combat the underlying problem which could be nervousness, anxiety etc...
