There's loads of information on here. Type "smear tests" into the search button at top of page

I had one a couple of years ago, because of a vaginal infection. I know it's embarassing, but to the doctors it's a everyday thing. Personally i found it quite uncomfortable, but it was over very quickly.

Get the doctor to explain everything to u, and to talk you through it all. That really helped me. Try & relax and it will be over very quickly

Also, try and relax because if ur tense it will be more uncomfortable.

Its a little uncomfortable, I wouldnt say it was painful though, just felt really cold lol!

They do it really quickly and just take the swabs, so thats all there is to it.

The only thing I found a bit embarassing was when they asked me to strip down below the waste, there was something really military about the way the nurse said it, but she was a miserable cow, hopefully you'll get someone nicer!! But it took literally 2 minutes and that was it.

They are OK. Obviously not the nicest experience, mind. And I agree with cold!

One of the women at work told me once she went for one and the power went. so they asked her if she'd rather come back or use a torch  And she used the torch, but she had to hold it and everything because the nurse needed both hands

I agree completely agree with that ! But luckily i had my GP doing it - so i knew her & that made it easier. I was covered up with a blanket though. To the OP - i'm sure u will be covered up, but if not ask for ablanket or something

I found it a very degrading experience.

Not what you wanted to hear but ho hum.

The first one I had was exceedingly painful and actually made me bleed. This may have been because I was a virgin at the time and it tore my hymen.

I thought we didn't get called til we were 23 or 25?!

I was a virgin for my first one. That proably explains why i found it soo uncomfortable. Also found it rather painful - but that was becuase i was so tense & couldn't relax.

Why did you get a smear test if you were a virgin?! I thought you only need it if you're sexually active?

Me too. I only had one because of a possible infection. I haven't been called for one yet.

Nope I was 20 too.
I bled lots also (so much so that it was like having a period) but not from my hymen breaking but because the nurse was quite rough when taking the swab so she irritated my cervix. I then had lots of complications, repeat smears and colposcopies. A year later and they finally realise there was nothing ever wrong with me.

Well it really was but I think I'm a one off case as my friends have had no complications at all. But at least I don't have to go back for another 5 years!
