The relative atomic mass of an atom is dependant upon the number of protons, neutrons and electrons it contains. The amount of such particles can determine the properties of the atom itself.
For example, the number of protons can determine the charge in the nucleus, and therefore determine the chance of the atom sharing, gaining or losing electrons. This can affect the type of bonding used, and the ultimate strength of the material produced. The total number of nucleons (protons and neutrons combined) are responsible for the mass and general radioactive properties of an element. The atomic mass can also determine where the atom is placed on the Periodic Table. Therefore, the physical properties of atoms from various ranges of atomic masses could be examined. :smile:
