Work Experience?

Next year, I'm hoping to read English, with a study abroad year, at a Russell Group university and before I leave, I want to do work experience which will make my personal statement stand out.
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for work experience placements I could do? It would be so helpful.
I've emailed all the local newspapers but have been unsuccessful.
