I'm applying for uni this year & my predicted grades aren't great so my plan is to apply for universities that I actually want to go to & if I don't get any offers, go through clearing or reapply next year and take a gap year. (this is because I did really badly at AS due to extenuating circumstances)

My problem is that my sixth form tutor requires us to put down an 'insurance' place - a university we will definitely get an offer from. The thing is, there are no universities that I'm interested in that have low enough grades to satisfy her.

so my question is, if i put down an 'insurance' choice (that I don't want to go to) and get an offer, can I decline it and go through clearing if it's the only one I get?

    thanks

If you're happy to end up without any uni places, you can certainly decline the only offer you have. No-one can force you to go to uni. Although, don't forget if you do better than your offer, adjustment is also an option on results day.

However, your tutor can't dictate your uni choices. Her advice is sensible (although there are no definites when applying to uni), but you are free to ignore this advice and apply to any five unis you chose.
