Glasgow Uni vs Strathclyde

I've received unconditional offers from 4 universities (2 courses at glasgow, 1 at strathclyde, heriotwatt and edinburgh). I've narrowed down my choices to be between Strathclyde and Glasgow. I applied for Economics. I know that Strathclyde's Business School has a good rep, but doesn't Glasgow have a better rep overall? Also I don't know which uni would impress employers more. I heard that Strathclyde's library is quite crap. I'm going to the open days for both unis on 20th and 21st March. I really would appreciate some advice from the quality of teaching to the student union to the library, anything would help me!

Thanks a lot and I hope to hear from people soon

Hoi Laura!

Congratulations on being accepted to University  Both Glasgow and Strathclyde are very good Universities and are well respected worldwide. I study at Glasgow University but Strathclyde is better for business type subjects and as you mentioned, the business school at Strathclyde has a great reputation and is highly ranked within Europe.

In terms of Strathclyde's library being crap- you can actually use Glasgow library if you are a Strathclyde student and vice versa so you get the best of both libraries! As for unions and the social side, both universities have the city of Glasgow and all its nightlife has to offer. Strathclyde has one large union with many different bars and Glasgow has two different unions with different bars/clubs so both universities have something to offer in terms of union facilities.

If you have any more questions feel free to ask

Personally I'd choose Glasgow for the extra status. Yes, Strathclyde is good at what it does, but it's a very different experience between going to an ancient university and a newer university.

There's not a lot in it though.

Yeah, I was thinking that I might enjoy the experience of going to an ancient university plus it is set in a beautiful area but I am still undecided and I hope that the applicant's visit day will help me to choose. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the teaching is like at Glasgow and Strathclyde.

It's very good to hear that students have the use of both libraries.

I would also like to know about the atmosphere at both unis. Do they have a good mix of home and international students? I am Scottish but I like the idea of mixing with people from all over the world.

It's true that Strathclyde might have a better reputation for business but Adam Smith, the father of Economics studied and taught at Glasgow in the past. Also Glasgow just got accredited with the very prestigious AACSB(Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business) 2 months ago, so it is now only 1 accreditation behind Strathclyde.

As you can tell, I am extremely confused about where to go so I can use all the help I can get from all you guys out there!

It sounds like you already have made your mind up about going to Glasgow and are just looking for reasons not to go to Strathclyde. Strathclyde does have an impressive business school and it still has one more accreditation than Glasgow does - however if you just want to look good then it seems Glasgow is for you. I also think Strathclydes Student Union is better too - even though Glasgow has two you are only allowed to be a member to one of them so the fact they have two makes no difference really whereas Strathclydes is better. Yeh I just got told today that you can use any library in Glasgow which is quite cool

I was stuck with pretty much the same decision. I chose Glasgow as I loved the beautiful architecture of the buildings. I liked the halls of residence and I thought it a more friendly atmosphere in my opinion.
For the feel of simply "going to university and getting the university experience", i'd say Glasgow. I was stuck with the decision of Glasgow or St Andrews, and I chose the latter because it's just the ultimate student experience, seriously. But Glasgow is still an excellent place to study and live
Hey!

I'm having pretty much the exact same problem. SOOO confused on which of the two I should take. I went to Glasgow Applicant's day last Tuesday and I'm going to Strathclyde tomorrow. Hopefully, this will make me make up my mind. I've been thinking about going to Strathclyde then I changed my mind to Glasgow and then back to Strathclyde again.. After the applicant's day for Glasgow I've now decided that unless Strathclyde SERIOUSLY impresses me tomorrow... I'm going to go for Glasgow.

My reasons:

(Oh I'm wanting to do accounts btw)

1. You get a BAcc from Glasgow whereas you get a BA in Strathclyde to do accounts.

2. Although people always say Strathclyde has the best business school... Glasgow happened to tell me that Accounts in Glasgow is 1st in the whole of UK and 5th in the whole of Europe...

3. There are new labs set up for the accounts department!

4. There are some real funky old lecture halls in Glasgow.

5. I really liked the atmosphere in Glasgow.

6. Glasgow has a real good reputation for being the top of the top...

Correct me if I'm wrong but... why do I always hear scary stories about Glasgow being quite unfriendly and first years always end up leaving??? I've known quite a few people that done that, which is the only thing putting me off!

Someone help!! Need as much info as possible before i have to reply to my offers!

THANKS!!!!!!

This thread is quite old, but I think that is the reason some of you might be able to help me since you already have made your decision.

I'am stuck with the same decision, Glasgow or Strathclyde?

Glasgow: Msc Financial Forecasting and Investment

Strathclyde : Msc Finance and Investment

Has everyone heard back from Glasgow University yet? I sent my application away start of December then I was later told that I wouldn't have a reply til at least mid march. I still havent heard and neither have some of my friends. We applied to faculty of arts and dont quite have the grades yet so were hoping for conditional offers so im just wondering if people have actually recieved conditionals yet? or im probs looking at a rejection.
I was stuck between three unis last year (Glasgow, Strathclyde, and Aberdeen). After deciding I didn't want to go as far away from home as Aberdeen, I had to choose between Glasgow and Strathclyde. I've not once regretted coming to Glasgow. In terms of surroundings and general atmosphere, it wins every time (I've spent a fair amount of time in Strathclyde uni for various reasons, and it doesn't compare). You probably won't know until you go to both the open days - once I did, I knew straight away exactly where I was supposed to be going :p: just didn't like the Strathclyde law dept at all. There's not much to call between them otherwise, so it really does come down to stuff like atmosphere, and ofc personal preference. The only thing better about Strathy in my opinion is that it's in the town centre which is a bit handier for amenities, but only a bit.

Thanks for the suggestion, but putting atmosphere and fun on the side, would you still recommend Glasgow over Strathclyde for studying finance?

Going to open days is a little hard for me since I'am an international student.

Hi Everyone,
As most of you here,I too am confused between Strathclyde and Glasgow.I guess the thread is quite old but maybe some of you can help me decide which univ I should choose.
Glasgow univ: MSc Management
Strathclyde Univ : MSc Business and Management(MBM)

I was thinking of going with the university with has a good mix of cultural diversity and a university which has high reputation. I heard Glasgow might have majority of their students from China(90%) which might not be a good blend of cultural diversity.I love Glasgow buildings. Not sure of graduate prospects. I am not quite sure of Strathclyde. I got to decide this week Thursday to accept the offer..

Thanks in Advance

Hi there,

Can you please rank those three universities for me, according to reputation and education quality. I have applied for MSc Economics

Strathclyde
Leeds
London School of Economics

Hi folks!

Which University has a good reputation and quality education between Strathclyde, Leeds and London School of Economics? please help. I have applied for MSc Economics
obviously LSE is the best choice for economics. now between strathclyde and leeds i believe the differences are very slight
what i would like to ask is which university in your opinion guys offers better chemistry strathclyde or glasgow?
I went to Glasgow and found it very cliquey, especially if you're a home student. Could be just me though; everyone has different experiences.
