The Student Room Group

how to go about this

I am disabled, therefore it follows that I have to be in the most awkward flat socially, here at uni. OK, picture this, 4 rooms, and up until quite recently 3 guys. Me, a guy who i don't really see much and have anything in common with and a lovely chap -disabled too, but hes a postgrad always working his socks off, in his late 30s. So socially, nothing really going there. Now, an international student has just moved in and i want to make him feel welcome -especially because finding a guy with cerebral palsy living next to you can be daunting, especially when your english is poor and my speech is hard to understand... BUT, ever since he's moved in the flat STINKS of smoke. I don't want to cause a confrontation but I just can't stand it... What should i do??

i take it he smokes? all you can do is ask him if he would mind smoking outside as the smell is bothering you. don't be nervous, you've been there longer than he has and internationals tend to be quite polite, sorry to stereotype but thats my experience.
if you really cant do that, just pretend you have asthma or something. good luck :hugs: xxx

Internationals are usually quite accomodating and polite, as Jonquil has said. Is he smoking in the flat? If he's doing that then it would be fairly reasonable of you to ask him if he could do it outside, but if you mean his clothes etc, if he's a really really heavy smoker, I don't really know. Which is it? I sympathise, that sounds rubbish.

I don't know what it is unfortunately :frown:

Alright Ted (fellow former-Alton student).

I'm not sure how to deal with that. I guess you could put "No Smoking" signs all over the place!

Reply 5

It's a fair enough request to suggest he does it in his own room and/or outside.

Reply 6

maybe just as a passing comment say "can anyone smell smoke?" and he might get the message?

Reply 7

Yeah, just speak to him and request he smoke outside.

Does your Uni allow smoking in halls?... Ours don't so isn't much of a problem asking people not to, so just double check about that!

Apart from that, as others have said, just drop a hint in a convo, or a passing comment about it. Maybe ask the postgrad?

Heehee...you could start a conversation around the dinner table about the new smoking laws...

If it is a non smoking hall, report him anonymously to the warden/halls office

All of the above are good ideas but if they fail, Febreze is your friend.
