Firstly, the blood vessel constricts in order to reduce the amount of blood reaching the cut. As a result of this, less blood is lost during the blood clotting itself. Platelets from the blood then spread across the cut and stick there to also prevent further bleeding.
*When the platelets are grouped together like this, it is called a platelet plug.*
Various chemical reactions can occur on this platelet plug in order to form a fibrin clot.
*Fibrin is a type of protein found in the blood.*
This process is also known as the coagulation cascade.
