According to a senior negotiator, Martti Ahtisaari, who is the former Finnish President and a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, Russia proposed more than three years ago that Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, could step down as part of a peace deal.

If this is the case, then our responsibility for the current predicament of the refugees is even greater, after our illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq bred ISIL, including many senior members of the terrorist group, who were radicalised whilst being tortured in the Coalition Provisional Authority's prisons there.

It also, incidentally, bolsters the philosopher Noam Chomsky's position that the West are not interested in getting rid of Assad, just as they've been content to condone various other brutal dictatorships in the Middle East in the past and in the present. As he puts it, there were a number of ways the West could have helped to overthrow Assad without intervening directly:

The fact of the matter is, that were the United States and Israel interested in bringing down the Syrian regime there is a whole package of measures they could take before they came to the arms-supply option. All these other options remain available, including, for example, America encouraging Israel to mobilize its forces along the northern border, a move that would not produce any objections from the international community and which would compel the regime to withdraw its forces from a number of frontline positions and relieve the pressure on the opposition. But this has not happened, nor will it, so long as America and Israel remain unwilling to bring down Assad's regime.
We should not condone extreme dictatorships. As the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn wrote in the Observer three days ago:

Isis is utterly abhorrent and President Assad’s regime has committed appalling crimes. But we must also oppose Saudi bombs falling on Yemen and the Bahraini dictatorship murdering its democracy movement, armed by us.
