2. What would the effect be on the rate by doubling [X]?

What about by doubling one then the other? i.e. the same as doing them both at the same time.
3. If x is doubled the rate will double
If y is doubled the rate will quadroople does that mean it will increase 6 times?
4. It goes 2x as fast and then it goes 4x as fast as that.

It goes 4x then 2x more.

Work it through algebraically;

r0=k*[x0]*[y0]2

r1=k*[x1]*[y1]2 where x1=2x0

r1=k*2[x0]*(2[y0])2

r1=(2*22)*k*[x0][y0]2

r1=8k*[x0][y0]2

Ratio of r1 to r0;

r1/r0 = (8k*[x0][y0]2) / (k*[x0]*[y0]2)

r1/r0 = 8

So the rate is eight times faster, and you don't need to know the rate constant.
Obviously this is the process that takes about four seconds in a practised mind, so you don't need to write all that out ever.
