Abnormally fast growing muscles?

Sorry for the really stupid question, I know nothing really about sport/exercise/the body/ I am just curious.

I generally don't do much exercise, I go through "phases" of doing one activity or another with lulls of a few months in between when I do nothing. For 6 months I played hockey then later I took up sailing for around the same amount of time then tennis for a while etc.

I have not done any real sport/exercise since about September then two weeks ago I started going to Pilates (like yoga but more physical, less mental) I have only been to 4 one hour sessions so far but have already noticed a huge difference, more than I think is normal. For example a week ago I could not do chin ups, now I can. There is also a big visual difference, my sister saw me without my top on yesterday and commented that she didn't know I had a "6-pack".

Not that I am complaining I am just curious, is Pilates some secret super muscle builder or is it that I am lucky and build muscle quickly? I remember watching a documentary about a very rare illness which causes muscles to grow uncontrollably. So much that you require surgery every 6 months or so to remove it. I don't think it is quite that bad though hahaha
