    Say that you are sorry for his loss and offer some kind of practical help if there is anything you can think of. (Making sure he has some food would be a start.) Making a general offer of help is well-meant but can put the person under a sense of obligation to think of something when they aren't in a state to do so, so be imaginative about the practical stuff. Do the laundry, get some shopping in, offer to inform your mutual friends so he doesn't have to etc. Offer to talk about it but don't push it if he doesn't want to. Take your cue from him.
