I am torn between whether to carry on my computer science degree and just become a plumber because I don't want to be a corporate slave, do you reckon this is extreme? Although I am academic, I also like to be practical.

Sort of. Who says you will become a corporate slave within the Computer Sci field? Possessing a degree would make you much more employable everywhere regardless of whether you even want a job in the Computing field. Finish the degree, look at your job options and if you're still not happy then become a plumber.

I wouldn't mind being an IT consultant and do a bit of coding. Advise people on what technologies to use etc. as it is at least some what sociable.

Yep, these are specialists so I'm guessing they have ~10 years experience. Also very in demand atm following all these attacks on websites and systems etc
