Appetite Suppressant?

I suffer from really frequent debilitating migraine attacks, and after bouncing around from various preventative medication to medication, my doctor put me on sodium valproate (epilepsy med) daily, which is actually very effective at preventing the migraines (now down to about 2/3 a month  )

Trouble is, one of the side effects of valproate is increased appetite, and I have noticed that I am nearly constantly hungry, and I've been putting on shed loads of weight :frown: Literally, I could eat a meal (pasta/rice, some fish, vegetables and salad) and then ten minutes later have to go and make myself a sandwich or two because I feel so hungry :frown:

I try my hardest to put up with it, but it can often get really painful (and loud :s-smilie:) Recently, someone suggested I talk to my Doctor and ask about appetite suppressing drugs. I've done a bit of research, but I can only find evidence of these drugs being indicated for morbid obesity, not for my situation. Just wondering if anyone knew anything about this, or had any experience with this? Before I go and potentially waste my Doc's time hehe.

Thanks!

Adios

I just know those are appetite suppresant pills..you can buy em over the counter I think

Apparently Adios works by "stimulating the metabolism of fat into energy" :s-smilie: I'm very wary of herbal slimming pills, they seem to be a huge waste of money.

You should see your GP again - maybe he doesn't know how severe the side effects are? Maybe he can try you on a different drug?

Either that or you do shedloads of exercise to counteract the shedloads of food you're needing...but I hate exercise! :p:

Adios are not appetite suppressants at all.

Perhaps you simply need to change your diet, I think there is some research into how certain starchy foods variate your blood sugar levels rapidly so you get hungry faster. I have found if I eat a meal with lots of pulses and maybe some Quorn (Im a vegetable) I do feel fuller for longer rather than eating pasta/rice meals.

EDIT: Before anyone asks me for sources I don't have any, I'm trying to remember where I read about this study...the other half is my own personal opinion...so no flaming ta!

Yeah, that's the GI diet principle. Which I did try, but I found it really hard not to eat things like bread and rice, I'm weak hehe. Still felt hungry whilst i was doing it though. :frown:

I don't know if any of this will work as its not about a drugs side effect but just generally always being hungry (haha).

Try drinking water instead of eating, it usually stops me from being able to consume food. Otherwise I would talk to your doctor.

I'd go back to the GP and speak to them about it. They will more than likely be keeping a note of your weight (?) so can see the effect on you?

Their may be a similar medication which you can try to see if it reduces your migranes while not increasing your appetite.

Good luck.

wow i never heard of epilepsy medication for migraines! my mum suffers from sever migraines, all i've ever seen her take is Syndol poor thing. I have a cousin whos got epilepsy and she too gains weight but she tends to just diet and work hard and drop a lot it every now and then. Have you tried exercising to try and keep it off?

I've heard hoodia suppresses the appetite.

Quite unsure about how, where to buy or what variety, but I am sure it's not something google can't help with. :p:

I'm a vegetable too. It might not help the hunger but if you try going veggie for a while you may find that your digestion feels more..... comfortable. A lot of people find that if they stop eating meat they feel a lot better. I am a firm believer in the veggie way... purely because I know how hellish trying to digest meat makes me feel. You could start by trying that...

... as for appetite suppressants be VERY careful! You don't want to end up gonig too far the other way.

Good luck!

I had a similar situation;
I had to take steroids for over a year as i had a kidney disease. This made me put on so much weight in such a short space of time that now i have stretch marks on my arms and hips which still havent really faded too well even after 2 years. I found continuation with regular excericise helped, drink plenty of water and try and eat salads/popcorn (stuff with loadsa fibre) when you are still hungry.
Eating stuff that usually fills you up doesnt work, i think it is more quantity of food when medication is concerned. So load of healthy stuff!!! By doing this i was able to stop waking up at 4am to eat, and i lost a fair bit of the weight i put on.
Now i am back to how i was but this is 2 years on after i stopped taking the steroids. I am not sure, but i think the weight gain side effect in valporate is very similar to in prednisolone. Talk to your GP, tell them how you feel. I was extremely upset about the side effects so they put me on another medication that they never mentioned before. Maybe there is the same for migraines, i dont know.
Good Luck

yes, I agree.
I had a phase of atkins-style terrible eating habbits, which got out of control...ever since I got my life back on track I find I can't touch a bit of meat and will very rarely eat cheese because it messes with my digestion...cramps, wind the lot. Veggie ftw!

Went to my GP for something else yesterday, and managed to ask her about this problem. She said there wasn't anything medical she could do about it, and suggested that if I needed to snack, to try and eat low calorific foods like fruit. If after eating a meal I get hungry too soon she suggested drinking plenty of water or sugar free drinks, and just trying my best to last an hour or so without caving in, and it should pass.

Oh and btw, I'm mostly a vegetable hehe, I don't eat meat very often

A few friends of mine have tried the adios tablets and apparently they are really good, a friend of a friend has lost 6 lbs so far and he's been on them for 3 weeks.
