do you have an irregular sleeping pattern? - coz that causes insomnia or do you have a lot on your mind? - coz then your sub-consious won't let your mind relax and let you sleep

Watch a boring movie or read a boring book. Do something that requires no concentration.

Insomnia sucks, trust me I know, I've never slept well! Even as a baby!

Try this society, you may get more help  As for me, I find if you have so much running through your mind, then no matter what you do, you won't sleep :frown: Maybe sort the stuff in your head out? It won't be easy but you might start sleeping better when you deal with the major problems you're worrying about?

This is coming from a person who can simply NOT fall asleep without listening to her ipod  Do you have a portable music thing you can listen to, to help you drop off? Cos, seriously I cannot sleep without my ipod - I think it's cos it blocks the crap in my head out and replaces it with music

Watch Date Movie.

Seriously though, this might sound like a silly way of doing it, but here's how I usually get to sleep if I'm stressed.

- Turn the heating off. This way you'll feel cosier in bed.
- Turn the lights out. The light bulb gives a feeling of warmth and being awake.
- Put on a soothing CD, and play it quite quietly. The one that always gets me is this one:

I know that sounds silly, and you may even hate Simon & Garfunkel, but if you concentrate on the music you'll stop concentrating on your other stresses and I guarantee you'll be out before the first disc's even half-finished. It's just the most peaceful album ever. You can get it from Amazon's new/used bit for about £3.

I have quite a few problems sleeping and have seen myself staying up till 7am at times without ever feeling tired, but whenever I try the above steps it tends to work really well.

Also, actually, the society I recommended in the previous post might help you relax, if only simply to know you're not the only one and that many of us suffer with insomnia!

I've never really slept properly at uni to be honest.. if at all, i remember lying wide awake at 7 or 8 willing myself to go to sleep! It's got to the point where i just toss and turn until im completely exhausted and only manage an hour or two. I go to the gym and stuff try and get up early to make sure im tired by the time i get to go to bed.. but most of the time it just really doesnt work! the more i want to sleep the worse it gets and im worried because im tired at about 4pm usually during uni and then not at all when im back at home and ready to sleep!

At the moment ive got alot of stress and stuff which has heightened the problem and made it unbearable.. x

Me too

Only I wake up in the morning...well 4 hours later...with the earplugs still in my ears! Still though, 4 hours is double my normal sleep!

Aw bless! I worry too that I'll toss and turn and end up choking myself on the earphone wire

The only 'good' 6 hour sleep I get is when it's alcohol induced...but then I wouldn't be surprised to feel even worse in the mornings! I don't ever get hangovers, but I can't imagine drinking an extortionate amount every night is good for ya!

Hehe, nice to know theres such a vibrant scene here on TSR at night :p: Ive always had troubles sleeping, but nothing on the scale you guys seem to get :frown: I normally manage 4-5 hours which is doable for me

But as for tips for sleeping, i cant sleep unless my TV's on, otherwise i get some roaring noises in my head that makes peace unattainable. Reading a book for ages works too, usually strains my eyes or brain til i fall asleep :p:

lol... I feel anything but vibrant right now.

I find I used to sleep so much better up until last year. Final year at uni really will leave me scarred for life though.

I can't even remember the last time I slept well. I have often fallen asleep while I'm reading cases, and wake up in the morning to find all the papers scattered all over the floor.

Gem, the whole iPod thing is definately a recipe for disaster! I wonder if there's any horror stories about it around...

Oh...my finals were awful! As well as insomnia I was getting panic attacks from the stress...recipe for disaster! So bad in fact, during one exam my lecturer got me a JD and coke to calm me down! Honest! She was the best lecturer ever!

But, just think it'll all be over soon, and you can relax!

As for the falling asleep when reading Uni stuff, I've been known to wake up with a stats book imprinted on my cheek

Maybe 'think' - afterall the mind is a powerful thing. However I'm kinda getting over them now, trust me after about 3/4 years for me, things got better, especially if you concentrate on 'beating' them  I'm sure it could be SO MUCH less time for you - I'm a slow learner  hehe!

In my final year at Uni (I graduated in July) I'd panic at the slightest thing, until I eventually took on a 'sod it' attitude and it was due to that attitude I've been getting better, I've even managed to pass my driving test, after SIX years of learning, so it is do-able! I wish you all the luck

Right last night.. i had an ok night dropped off at nearly 8am and had to be in uni at 11, which i managed, are they any other tips for nodding off earlier?

I went to the doctor again, because mine is definitely worse. So far what he gave me is helping.
