UCL Incorrectly advertised their IMB course.. IMB = ITMB!

Right, I have a dilemma - I applied to read IMB - Information Management for Business' at UCL in Sept. 07'. I've onyl recently (a few days ago) discovered that the IMB course that UCL offer is actually called ITMB - Information Technology Management for Business'! Click here to see the other univerisities that offer the course, as you can see they all advertise the course at an ITMB course except UCL!

Im very frustrated by this, as I thought I was applying for an Information Management Course (a study in Information Science), rather than a weak Technology/Computer science course! Before im told that I should have checked the course content - I did, but I didn't realise how ICT-focused it was, and how little Information/Management/Business focused it wasn't :frown:.

Is there anything I can do at this stage? My application was provessed almost 3 months ago, and I have an itnerview at UCL in a few weeks for the IMB/ITMB course. Can I not switch to another course? My chances of getting a job in Investment Banking have pretty much gone down the drain by this revelation.:s-smilie:

Any replies would be appreciated.. thanks.

IMB wasnt going to get you into front office IB anyways...

How do you know? Isn't it the institution that matters more than the course? If I recall correctly, you too are anticipating to read Computer Science at UCL, also, Sales isn't mathematically challenging.

Well IB's would never choose someone who has studied IT over someone who has studied economics/maths. I want to work in technology, not front office.

Opposite problem, I applied for Enterprise Computing at Sheffield (before having 'Information Technology Management for Business' added to the name) on the understanding 'The course is deliberately designed to be similar to the normal Software Engineering in years one and two.'. It now looks very watered down with modules like 'Introduction to Behaviour at Work' and I'm probably going to ask to be switched to the Software Engineering course.

Find a UCL course you're interested in. Get in contact with them and ask to switch courses, the organisation of this new course seems pretty rushed to me.

Does your BTEC even meet the normal A-level requirements for front office? Comp sci is much more respected than IMB which is in essence is a daffy duck course (bit like the human resources with blablabla crap at LSE). Saying that I'm not in any position to tell you your aspirations aren't realistic and so I wish you the best of luck. Also what's up with all the username changes? Internal transfers are quite easy so I hear, try and get into a real course (from an IB point of view) once you're there. They say they don't care what uni and course you do but lets face it someone coming out of UCL with Maths or Economics with a 2.1 would probably be preferred over a 2.1 in this course you're doing unless you're substantially better in the interviews, which, judging by your previous posts on this forum would not be a sure thing.

It's an online student forum that serves as a place for advice... not a 1st tier conference room where formaility is of the essence...

That aside, thanks for the info.

Well obviously. I based that comment on the fact your current posts imply you're still in the learning process (not a bad thing at all) where as others in our age group are (unfortunately for you and I) miles ahead.

Given the fact that I turned to IB less than 2 months ago I wouldn't say Im doing too bad, but I agree with you o nthat one. Im still in the learning process, and wil lbe for the next few years, but thats all normal. We're not THAT behind btw .. many decide when theyr'e 18, 19 or 20.. so people on this forum say anyway.

I know some one that does this degree and there no computer science element to it. It just teaches you how to run an IT business.

Do you think there could be any opportunities to work in consulting after this degree?

Reply 13

I thought you wanted to go into investment banking? The degree is probably ideal for management consultancy, but you will be competing against computer scientists, engineers, mathematicians etc.

I'd very much like to go itno Investment Banking. I've learnt quite a bit about the field, and I'd be aiming to work in sales, rather than trading, M&A, and the other number-crunching sectors.
Consulting is the backup plan, as very few do actually make it into banks at a level where theyr'e satisfied.

My alternate choice, instead of UCL, would be Business Management at KCL. :s-smilie:

You should definitely opt for management at kcl.

Management consultancy is more exclusive than IB, McKinsey, Bain and BCG are full of oxbridge grads.
