Pain Problem

Thought I'd start a thread about actual health as opposed to relationships on this board...

OK, so was about to go to bed last night when I started feeling abdominal pain in the right side of my body, towards the back, just below the ribcage, but only on one side. Kept me in bed this morning as it was too painful to move, but towards the afternoon it kind of went away. I get this every once in a while, maybe everything few months. My first guess was maybe kidney stones? It's a sort of internal aching feeling, but when its at it's worst it feels like more of a crushing pain. No pain anywhere else, and am generally a pretty healthy guy.

Anyone experienced this, or have any idea about what could possibly be wrong?

Any help is appreciated.

I get that because I once had a kidney infection followed by lots of UTIs which made it flame up. I have never been tested for kidney stones but I have been tested for kidney function loads and they're fine! I just flow with it.

My RE teacher when I was at school had kidney stones and he said you know about it, it's constant intense pain.

Liver? Have you been on a bit of a binge recently?

Occasionally (as in when I go down to Brighton and spend a week drinking every night and sleeping on people's floors), my Liver, which is on one side of the body, below the ribcage, starts twinging a little...

if it is your kidney, youl know because it will feel like your urinating burning oil

I personally find it feels like peeing lemon juice with tiny hooks in itwhen you have kidney problems but that's personal opinion!

Hi,

Don't know if this is much help, but I suffered from kidney stones for about 10 years. I finally had them surgically removed a year ago (no guarantee that I won't get more though  ). The pain was in roughly the same place as you describe, towards my back rather than my stomach, and on one side more than the other (the kidney that had the stones in). I suppose the extent of the pain is the most distinguishing factor. It is absolute agony - I used to get it about twice a year, and I was just crawling up the walls with it. Painkillers weren't any use because the pain made me vomit every few minutes. The whole episode lasted about 12 hours usually, with a couple of days after feeling sore and weak. Unfortunately I didn't kick up enough of a fuss until the last couple of times, when I went to the hospital to get proper painkillers and they gave me an x-ray; prior to that I spent 10 years being told that it was 'just menstrual cramps'

If it sounds like what I've described, and you get it again, I'd recommend getting an x-ray (not an ultrasound scan), because you really don't want that hanging over you indefinitely! Hope this helped.

Am currently 30 days into lent of the not drinking variety, so doubt it's that!

Were you drinking a lot before then? That might be it. Although I doubt that'd take a month to present. (And surely it's not 30 days of lent yet? That'd mean there were only 10 days until Easter...)

Problem is it's not that painful; it puts me out of action for maybe a morning. After that it feels tender, but not really painful.

Well me and my flatmates started early so we'd be able to drink for the last week of term... and yeah I drank a lot the few days before lent, but I've done sports events and loads of running since then with no problem at all. Went to see the uni nurse today and she told me to take Ibuprofen and if it stays go back to see the Doctor.

Ahh well.

I love the way doctors will prescribe ibuprofen for absolutely everything. I'm not saying it's wrong or right but man I'd like some shares in those bad boys!
