fastest way would presumably be that plane service up and running (£50 one way between oxford and cambridge- 20 minute journey time). Although realistically the train might be most practical. Trains between ox and london go through padington, and cambridge and london go from kings cross. So you'd have to get the tube between the two. It's about £16 return from cambridge to london, or about £30 from oxford to cambridge return. The other option is the coach services, which are much cheaper, but much slower. The X5 will get you between cam and ox in 4hrs for £7, return on the same day. Or there's various services going between london and ox/cam, similarly priced.

sorry i think i didn't express myself clearly...
i just want to visit oxford and cambridge separately...

I got a train from London to Oxford when I went (sorry, don't know the station). It was fast and not that expensive, I'd recommend it.

London to Oxford Cheap Day Return on the train is £17.40 and takes about an hour each way....

Coaches can be had considerably cheaper but take longer....

Depending on the time of day you travel the Oxford Tube (confusingly named coach!) doesn't take much longer ~1.5 hours or so journey time - i've found getting tubes to paddington/walking into the centre of Oxford can add up to the same! Speed will depend where you're travelling from & when possibly.

But the Tube saves £6.40 & I think runs more regularly later - so unless I want to travel all around London (makes more sense to get a 1 day travelcard) it's my method of choice.

Megabus!

For the cheapest ways....

Oxford: Oxford Tube coach booked in advance via the Megabus website.
Cambridge: National Express coach, I don't know if booking in advance makes it cheaper but it's probably worth checking.

Note that neither's the most convenient or quickest but definitely the cheapest!

My personal preference:

I have found the easiest way to get to Cambridge is by train from Kings Cross but avoid the rush hour - travel after 9.30.

Oxford is easier by coach. The oxford Tube buses run about every ten minutes from outside Victoria Station and stop in the centre of Oxford.

national express coaches to cambridge are usually £1 if you book a few days in advance, but they take like two hours and go from victoria, often not particularly close to where you are in london.

If you book well in advance you can get 5 pound train tickets from London to Oxford, and probably the same is true for Cam.

Reply 11

You could just go use the National Express, Megabus, and Railtrack websites and figure all this out for yourself...

Yeah, First Great Western have returns (well two singles actually) for £8 from Paddington to Oxford, as long as you go on certain trains, and book in advance. You can find it on www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Let's be honest: the cheapest way would be to walk.

I was going to say this. On a more serious note trains are fairly cheap and convenient if you have a railcard. I'd take the 'tube' bus to Oxford though as it's about half the price, and almost as fast.

What is a 'tube' bus?

london to oxford on the oxford tube is a tenner day/next day return for students or yp railcard holders (seven pounds if you travel after 3pm). the oxford tube is a bus service that runs from victoria london to gloucester green oxford. in london, it also stops at marble arch, kensington high street and hillingdon. in oxford it also stops at a few places on the outskirts (i forget which) then the high street and st aldates. it has nothing to do with a tube. thats just its name. it is quite good. its fairly comfortable, has free wifi (which is a bit slow, but oh well), takes about two hours depending on traffic and runs all day and night with fair regularity; generally about every 15/20 minutes.

it is the cheapest way to go between oxford and london. the train is quicker, but pricier. and i like the oxford tube more anymore. its fun.

that was quite comprehensive.

I'm unfamiliar with the distance, but this actually might be more expensive if you have to stop and eat and also, if you have to find accommodation for the night because of the length of a return journey. Ideally, perhaps, a bicycle ride might be better. :p:
