My IT teacher is the same. I'm now in year 11 and not once in my life have I had a theory lesson in IT. Last week was the deadline for our coursework and most of the people in my class were on D's and C's, and because I'm in set 1 it's the teacher's target to make sure everyone gets an A. So for weeks he was nagging these people to do some work on it and to hand it in while consistantly refusing to mark my coursework which was already on an A and only a few marks off an A*. Now, it may not matter to him how well I do but it sure does matter to me. I did eventually get my A* though :smile:

And then there's my English teacher. She sets us tonnnes of work and gives us detentions if we don't hand it in, yet when it comes to her marking it she just doesn't do it. I still don't know whether what I'm writing about poems or "To Kill a Mockingbird" is even relavent. Well, it probably is but I need to know if I go into enough detail to get an A* :mad:

And my science teacher, despite being a very nic person, lets us talk throughout the lesson and never makes sure that we do our work, so most people don't. I'm pretty good at blocking out noise but I do tend to get destracted sometimes. I actually wish I was in set 2 because their teacher actually makes sure that everyone gets A's and A* even if most people in her set hate her... And I wish we had science as seperate lessons, that would be so much better.

We do have good teachers though - my maths, history and German teachers are really really good and I am really happy with that. But to be perfectly honest, if you are a good student and if you care about your exam grades you will be able to get decent grades with all the information now available on the internet for revision.

A friend & trainee teacher said to me the other day:

"Your school has absolutely no discipline. They can't even get the uniform right. There is also so much politics going on within the school, mainly all the teachers hating [the Head]. If you took all the bad kids out of the school, it would be amazing. If you took all the good kids out, it would be terrible. It's right in the middle. I'm not even sure that i want to take the job next year. I haven't learnt anything at you school, basically. I understand that the school is huge (1800 pupils), but that's no excuse for the bad behaviour that some pupils [mainly Year 10's and under] demonstrate. Thank God you have a Sixth Form, otherwise there woudl be no teachers left! They would all leave!"

She is completely right, it's quite sad really... :frown:

I feel really let down by my ICT teacher. We're doing OCR National Diploma in ICT. When we started the course in September our teacher would tell us how we're going to have a qualification worth 4 GCSE grades. In December he told us that he didn't have enough time to complete the course and we'd only get the equivalent of 3 GCSE grades. In March, he told us that it would be near impossible to get 3 GCSE grades in 2 years so we will almost definitely get 2.
I could understand if we was a bad set, disruptive, didn't do no work etc. But we're not. :angry:@@@@@@@@@


I am doing same course, everyone in class is doing the equivalent of two, but if time our teacher said my self and a friend could aim to do 3/4, still don't know whether to do though, as haven't really got time, but feel if i was determined I could do it. Do you know about how accredited OCR Nationals are in ICT? I am a bit worried about how they will be accepted as we were initially mistakenly told they were GCSES, am that a Distinction would be an A*, but in fact if I do two I will get A*A equivalent (highest you can get) and for if do enough for 4, you get A*A*AA the (highest you can get). Wondering whether to do the extra two? will it look any better?

Very, Right now actually.
Doing AS Business and my tutor fell over and had what, 4 weeks off. The school used basic (non business) supply teachers to cover the lessons, Which ended up as doss lessons with no work set. She then returned for about a week and had a car accident and has been off since and the school continued with basic supply teachers. Only now in January (The month of the exam) have the school picked up and brought in a proper business teacher to substitute.

Well the exam was on Monday, If anyone that was in my class passed it from what we've learn't so far, I'll eat my hat.

Our school was a lot like that but in many ways I respect the education I was given for what it was and in many ways it influences the way I act at college. In school I was in top set for everything and was for the whole time I was there. Top set were still only encouraged to aim for Bs. (It is the worst school in our area) But you know what? We had fun. Lessons weren't about killing yourself to cram everything into your head. I vividly remember sat playing uno in maths....and nobody cared (Hey there was numbers on the cards!), being moved around in english more times than anything, and hiding around the classroom every time the history teacher left the room. I came out of school with 6As 3Bs and a C. Once at college everyone there had similar or higher grades since its a decent college, however many had worked there backsides off the whole time they were in school and continue to do it in college. I however tend to have fun, I don't spend every free revising and I may not always hand my coursework in on time, but it doesn't make me a bad student. I am what I am and if it was my schooling that made me like that, I'm thankful.

I thought a distinction was equivalent to an A? Yeah, I was told by another IT teacher I could do it in my own time but I really can't be bothered. I'm sorry but the course is crap - they haven't even finished it yet if you look at the CD/Thomas Telford website. Then there is the whole evidencing thing with the screen shots. It wouldn't be that bad but when we had nearly finished unit 1 (took us three terms) my teacher said we had to go through and give a reason for every action. For example, we would have a screen shot of us deleting a file then he wanted us to write something like 'I am deleting this file because I no longer use it and it is taking up space that I may need on my computer'. My whole class is failing because of our incompetent teacher. Are you doing unit 22? My teacher can't even use the programme - we have to suss it out for ourself. *rant*

I am doing Unit 22, have only just started though..teacher is okay with audacity software....but they have chosen Unit 9 the databases one...its one of the hardest, they said they chose it to ensure people wanting to alevel had a good background, however since sep, they have kept going back to unit 1 and 23 for the rest of class as marking happened in DEC..but mine was marked and graded in JULY so that time was pointless for me, as they didnt know what to do for unit 9, so i basically sat there doing anything but ICT...only just started working this week really.

unit 1..was a pain in the neck mine ended up like being a two hundred pages,,did your teachers make you sign it on every page???? and have it page numbered???

What other units you doing? any you recommend as easy?
theres a desktop publishing one that is so easy...thats worth 2/3 gcse..that im thinking of doing for my extra units...but not sure about the rest...

GCSE music I was in a class of 5. We had 5 full-time teachers and numerous supply teachers. In the end we got together and paid for a tutor. In the end 4 of us got A's and 1 got a B. We sent the bill to the last school who simply said "Not our problem" and on prize day they totally blanked the enoughs of our music group!

The other day in an English Literature lesson, we did no work for an entire 45 minutes and then were set a 45 minute timed essay question for homework. :eek:

I had pretty much the same problem at GCSE. For Science, I was put into a set where everyone apart from me and a few people were doing foundation level science. I was made to do the same work as everyone else - what took me 10 minutes, took them at least 30 minutes or more. In English, the teacher couldn't control us.

My school did this for science in year 11. The 'teacher' claimed to have a qualification of some sort in science, yet no-one learnt anything. I'm sure I learnt more from the teaching assissant as well. (and he wasn't even meant to teach me - he was there to help a girl with some stuff related to learning) Quite a few people complained and we got the blame for it. Because of course, we chose for our teacher to be off ill for months and be put with someone who can't teach.:rolleyes:

My Chemistry teacher went on maternity leave at the end of yr10 (July 07) and her replacement is awful. He was meant to be teaching us Additional Chemistry & kept getting us to do excercises from the furthur Chemistry section of the book, tried to set us a chemistry mock paper when the head of Science had said to us we were not having Science mocks & gave me a predicted grade which was higher than for bio & physics. As you can only get one overall grade for additional science that wasn't possible. The head of science said it must have been a typing error and the chemistry teacher said he meant to give me an a* (my other predicted grades were 'a'.)
The Head of Science is very experienced & I'm certain he knows what he is talking about.

The yr10 teacher was amazing, until I had her Chemistry was one of my weakest subjects, thanks to her I got a B in the Chemistry module I took in yr10 & now I've ended up with someone who can't teach. His lessons are also boring. If I'm lucky the amazing teacher will come back for the Summer Term & then find we haven't done all the right stuff.

Well at GCSE level i was just thrust into middle groups where half the people were stupid, 1/4 messed about and the 1/4 cared, and the 'brightest' students were put into a top set to aim for As and A*. In middle sets there was no teacher pushing me to aim high, no teachers giving me any extra help, i just had to sit in boring non challenging lessons only being taught enough techniques and knowlege to get me a B grade while all the students who were in my group and stuggling got all the help.
I came out of my GCSEs with 1A and 9Bs, which by the way was signifcantly better than many of the top set students.
Now we are doing AS levels, my results were around the 5th or 6th best in the whole year, and i just feel annoyed that i never had the chance to acheive my full potential at GCSE level.

Anybody else feel this way?

I feel totally let down by my school to the point that i am totally bitter towards most of the teachers here.
i was put in many low sets for my gcses and i was put in for a science that would not help me at sixth form as i wanted to do physics... because it would help me in the career i want to go into.
i got 2 b's 6 c's and 3 d's at gcse.
i was gutted as i pushed myself as hard as i could without any help from the school expect for in the two subjects i got B's in.

at sixth form ive had nothing but hurdles, ive been told id fail and ive been stopped doing subjects i want to because i will find "the other ones easier for my ablity".
ive had to fight my corner and i managed to make them change there mind on one subject and im proving them wrong.

sooner im out of this **** hole the better tbh.
(p.s im posting this from school!!!!.... and im putting off going to german because im probably gunna get kicked off!!)

Quite worrying - all these problems people have had, I have also encountered many problems involving poor teaching and just the school generally being ******. I think its due to the fact that most teachers can get away with not doing much work, thus not getting the class good results without getting in to trouble - this isn't the case in say a basic office job, having said that, its the lack of discipline teachers can enforce upon their pupils which results in the whole class messing about and the teacher quite rightly losing hope and interest...

Its a sad state of affairs when both the pupils don't make the most of what could potentially be one of the best education systems in the world and when teachers don't appreciate how much they are getting paid compared to teachers in other countries. Thats why I hate it when teachers complain about the amount of pay they get!!!

Maths, I used to look up, solve whatever was on the board in my head, then go to sleep for 10 minutes while it was solved on the board. I asked to do my GCSE early, was refused. I did science early instead, got a double A*. Waved the certificate in thier face next year and they went 'Oh look - the gap in your timetable fits in with A level maths! Do that!'. Would have been nice to have some support before. I learnt next to nothing in any subject in year 11 except maths/physics AS. All the classes always moved at the pace of the slowest, and setting was only for Maths/English/Science. Not that they were much better. People didn't behave or work or care. I'm actually surprised no one managed to blow up the science block, it was that bad! It is very much a tick box attitude - 'You'll get a C *tick* Next!'. Not helpful when I would most likely have got a C in year 9... Individual teachers (esp science) were good, but the system and pupils were not.

Yes, I do.

12 supply teachers in two years one after the other. Lost coursework. Damaged coursework. Forgotten exam scripts. people who threaten to kill you. Teachers we don't understand. Two design groups (60 people) - No one passed. Bitchy people. People who don't want to learn. People who set fire, flood, escape and jump on desks/out windows. Crap senco. Let down decent students.

Don't go there!

I hate my school, i was predicted a grade D:mad: for maths and was put in a **** set. My mum had to fork out £20+ a week so I could get taught the higher tier stuff! I managed to get a grade A in the end, but only because of my private teacher! The system of education in this country in diabolical. Can't wait till Uni

I have to say, I think I'm the odd one out here!

At my school (comprehensive) (doing GCSEs at the moment), teachers push everyone hard. Now that can be a real pain, but in the long run, it gets things done. Only problem I have had is DT (Resistant Materials), as we had a supply all last year, who got us doing the wrong stuff at times. I still haven't started practical work!

I know last year 75% of the year got 5 or more A* - C grades, year before was about 70%.. this year I think about 85% are predicted it.
