The Student Room Group

Brighton / Plymouth University!

Anyone been to or go to either?!

Im torn between the two as my 1st and 2nd choice. I have visited Brighton and didn't really get a good student vibe from the campus - also halls accomodation is limited.

Plymouth I haven't visited yet, but the only off putting thing so far is the location as its 7 hours drive from where I live, Brighton is only 3.

I am just looking for opinions and feedback from anyone who has some knowledge on them!

Cheers

I'm not sure about the unis but Brighton is a nicer city then Plymouth. I know both places quite well as I was born in Plymouth and have family there but I now live nearer Brighton.
You will probably find more students in the Brighton area as you have Sussex uni near by as well. Apparently 10% (I think) of the population are students.
I'm pretty sure as you live 3 hours away you would be fine with finding accomodation. Maybe give them a call and ask?
Good luck.

What about the quality of the courses you're doing?...

With reference to the number of students, Plymouth is one of the largest universities in the country with in excess of 30,000 students. So you won't be short of company

OP - What course will you be studying? If you go by league tables, then Plymouth is up there with Oxford Brookes as the top two new universities. I believe it is ranked around 45-50sh overall.

The university is recieving massive investment at the moment.
- Loads of new buildings and facilities being installed.
- New medical school
- New denistry school opening this year
- Some courses have jumped up 20-30 places in the leagues tables in the past couple of years.
- I believe (if my memory serves me correctly) that the teaching and research are both graded as 5*

I don't know anything about Brighton and so can't comment on comparisons between the two. I would strongly advise that you come to an open day though (I think there are open days every weekend until the end of this month).

My friend lives in Brighton (as do I) and goes to Plymouth. He hates the town (a lot) because apparently there's nothing to do there and the place is on the edge of the known world.

Brighton on the other hand is full to the brim with students, with plenty to do and see. Good clubs, the beach, the Downs, plenty of student accomodation...I could go on endlessly.

The 'beach' at Brighton cannot compete with beachs in Devon and Cornwall! :p: And we have Dartmoor a 5 minute drive from town. (Depends whether you like that sort of thing I suppose).

there are plenty of things to do in plymouth!
it's a really nice city with some VERY nice places surrounding it. and some very good beaches.
Plymouth uni is getting a lot bigger, I have family there and they are saying how it is growing over the city at a fast rate. The Union is newly built. Not too bad inside. I don't know about the night life though. Quite a few bands are starting to play there as well now. Bloc party, Jet, Capdown.

Brighton will be more expensive, but it is closer to london. To be honest I don't really know anything about brighton. have never been. Looked into it for uni and didn't like the prices.
