Useful Applications and Resources for University

I’ve decided to create a thread listing numerous applications and resource websites that may prove useful to students during their time in university. I’m going to put them into categories to make it a lot easier for people to quickly locate an application or resource in a section they need.

MAMP - local server for development offline

GIMP - free image manipulation software
iAWriter - used to create documents but also supports Markdown
Byword - used to create documents but also supports Markdown
Cactus - free static website generator
Pixelmator - best Photoshop alternative if you’ve got a Mac

I will be continuously adding to this thread and please feel free to make suggestions. If you do make a suggestion then also include what the app is for to give other people an idea.

Here's some of my suggestions:
-Maybe split development applications into multiple sections, and include these programs. Like

Image Editing
Infraview

Software Development
Notepad++
Netbeans
Eclipse

Audio Editing
Audacity

-Add Comodo Dragon, and Firefox Nightly to browsers.
-Add VPNs they may be a little advanced, but they are useful. Private Tunnel, Cyber Ghost, OpenVPN, Hotspot Shield.
-Add Anti-Virus & Anti-Malware: MalwareBytes, Avira, 360 total security, bitdefender, avast
-Add IM/Communication software, Skype, Yahoo Messenger, TeamSpeak, Mumble,
