What was the cause of the Anglo-German arms race from 1889?

I know that Britain started building Dreadnoughts because the German navy was quickly expanding, but why did Germany decide to have an arms race against Britain for?
Germany was pursuing a policy known as 'Weltpolitik' or 'a place on the sun' which entailed Germany creating an empire to rival that of Great Britain's which was the dominant European power at the time. In order to get an overseas empire they had to have a strong navy to fight for one and defend the one they had. Also, a strong navy would also help German overseas trade.

Great Britain, being an island nation with a huge empire, saw the build up of the German navy as a threat to their interests as well as their security. As a result they built up their navy just as Germany increased their own in order to become more powerful like Britain
