Go with your gut instinct is my best advice. Think of where you'd be happiest living and studying for 3 years, as it's a long, long time. I was in the same situation when choosing between Sussex and Durham (Queen's) and eventually chose Sussex for pretty much the same reasons you like it - great campus, great city etc. Hope that helps

I don't think you'd be stupid at all to make that decision. If you really like the uni and can see yourself living in Brighton for three years then go for it.
Have you visited Warwick yet?
Yeah Ive visited Warwick twice. Loved that campus too. And I think there's more to do actually on campus at Warwick than Sussex?

As for gut feeling? It was my gut feeling to go to Warwick when I visited it. But then it was my gut-feeling to go to Sussex yesterday. I dunno, it just felt... right? Hmph. I was hoping I wouldn't like it as much, so I'd just put it as my insurance. Sucks.

Yeah that must suck, but hopefully you will make the right choice in the end. I was going to say the accomodation will probably be cheaper at Warwick but I was wrong, one is £107 a week! That's pretty crazy.
Good luck on your decision.

If you were judging things purely on an academic basis, then yes, you would be stupid. On the Guardian league tables, Warwick got 70.17 for Modern Languages, whilst Sussex got 62.97.

But I think that'd probably miss the point. You'd be getting the Linguistics here, which you wouldn't be at Warwick, but Warwick seems to have a lot more in the way of a cultural focus. At Warwick, your year abroad would in the second year, and limited to Italy, whilst at Sussex it'd be in the third and probably open to pretty much *anywhere* Italian or French speaking.

Check out the in-depth descriptions, if you haven't already...

Sussex (click on the orange module codes for more detail) and Warwick.

It's also worth comparing Brighton with Coventry, and I can heartily recommend the Sussex lifestyle and overall 'experience'. Dunno about Warwick, but I'd assume that's a similar kind of campus-based vibe (although minus the sea and being able to escape into Brighton if it all gets too much...).

Either way, good luck in making your descision! I know it'll be tricky, but try to go where you feel you'd be happiest, not necessarily where you feel you *ought* to go.

As a student doing a French minor at Sussex:

Languages? Academically speaking and for teaching - choose Warwick. If you want cheap(er) accomodation and union put-on entertainment - probably Warwick too.

But then: Coventry is no Brighton, the midlands hardly the sunniest part of the world (nor is there a beach), and no union can put on what Brighton has to offer.

There's more to do on campus at Warwick because it's much more in the middle of nowhere - my friends who are there (whilst they love it) have said they often get bored and feel a bit stranded...whereas with Sussex you're close to Brighton AND London... plus you have beautiful countryside and a beach. So from the feel, i'd go for Sussex. But as others have said, go with your gut - what are you looking for in a uni, and where would you feel happiest?
What am I looking for in a uni? Christ knows. I want a green campus, which both have got. I want a place where I can go get fit, which both have. In terms of the union, well I didn't get to see Sussex's cos it was closed on the Saturday morning I visitied. I do rather love the union at Warwick though, and the arts centre is a big bonus.

I dunno, I mean I can see the ups and the downs of both. I know in league tables Warwick is a top 10 whilst Sussex is end of 20s. Certainly in terms of my yers living off campus I expect I'd prefer to live in Brighton then Coventry/Leamington etc. And for me, the course sounds more interesting for me at Sussex, due to the extra linguistics dimension. And I don't think I'd be too happy having to spend my second year in Italy if I went to Warwick - I'd much rather it was my 3rd.

But. Warwick was my gut choice when I started looking at unis originally. I love the campus, and I know in terms of my education Warwick would get the thumbs up. Meh. I don't know. Lol.
i know people are saying that you should maybe consider coming here because sussex is near brighton, near the sea, more exciting than coventry etc.

well.... i'm sure everyone at warwick has a great time as well, and it's full of great people. if your focus is on a university experience, and a university degree, warwick will be good for both (and for your degree, better). i came to sussex because, aside from wanting to study english lit, i really wanted to be around brighton because it's amazing for music. i felt i would have been kicking myself if i had gone anywhere else. if you think there's anything you might regret not having done, or somewhere you might regret not having gone, then perhaps that is the place for you. i'm sure warwick would be great for your course and fun as well. if you want to be further south, or you just really want to be in a very vibrant and pretty city, and this is your main desire, then maybe pick sussex. if not, warwick is just as good a uni and probably a lot better for languages.

Would I be stupid to choose Sussex above Warwick? Doing French and Italian if that helps. Warwick was gonna be my first choice but I visited Sussex yesterday and loved the campus, and Brighton is great. Hmph!

As somebody with some experience of both (I live in Leamington (which is the nearest town to Warwick Uni) and studied at Sussex), I'd have to say Sussex is a better choice if the academic departments seem even anywhere near even.

If you go to Warwick, you're stuck with Leamington which is, at best, a small town with more to do than it's size merits. Study at Sussex, and you've got Brighton, one of the most vibrant and amazing cities in the UK.

So if you think both academic departments are near enough equal (and the fact that you only mention your subject as an aside makes me think you do) I'd say choose Sussex.

Also, just between you and me (and everybody who reads TSR), Warwick students can be a bit 'I'm going to go to Uni and then work in the City/be a lawyer/investment banker' types. Which may or may not appeal to you, but I think they're ******s...

Well, it really depends on what your priorities are. If you are purely career minded then opt for Warwick otherwise go with your gut instinct coz your much more likely to enjoy your 3 years at university:cool:
Sussex all the way. Warwick may have an over-all better academic reputation but if you want a great student experience at a very good university then you cant get much better than Sussex. End Of. lol
Not that this particular sub-forum's particularly biased. Oh no ... :p:
I'm putting Sussex as my firm, then Warwick as my insurance.

That's because i'm built like that...

Having witnessed multiple Sussex vs Warwick boat races on the ski trip last week I would safely say that Sussex is your best bet, not having lost one.

In all seriousness though, I'd go for where you can see yourself more. When I first visited Sussex I knew it was where I wanted to be. I've had people ask me why I didn't go somewhere more prestigious but I see no reason why I should have - I'm at the place that totally suited me and where I wanted to be 100%. That's more important than league tables IMO.
I chose Warwick as my firm and Sussex as my insurance eventually. The thing that threw it for me was that I know that if I went to Sussex, I'd always be wondering "what if I'd gone to Warwick...", but if I went to Warwick, I wouldn't feel the same about Sussex. Maybe that's a stupid thing to go on, but I figured it was an indication of where I truly wanted to go.

Sounds like a fairly good plan, to be honest.

Grrr...I actually hate you. This is the first ski trip I missed in 4 years :bawling: Just can't bloody afford it without my Student Loan.

And now all these buggers are putting Les Arcs pictures up on Facebook.

Snow any good?
