Royal Household - how long did you have to wait?

Hi there,

Am trying to find a new, more prestigious job for the summer break (currently at Laura Ashley), and about a week ago I sent in my application for work at the Royal Households. I wanted to work as a guide or counter assistant at Buckingham Palace.

I assume that somebody on here has worked with them before? I want to know how long to wait before I receive a reply as I haven't heard anything yet :frown:

Did they contact you via email, telephone or post to arrange an interview?

Alternatively, if anybody can suggest a company that provides luxury customer service (what I have experience in!), please do...

I've applied for Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Household, the Royal Opera House, Harrods, Harvey Nicholls and Selfridges without any form of response yet... Grrr!

Thank youuuu

I work in the millenium stadium in hospitality. So on match days etc I work in the boxes or the hospitality suites, basically looking after the customers who have paid a LOT to be there. It's good fun  Wembley will definitely be needing the same sort of staff when its opened, in the stadium they're ALWAYS looking for new people.

I worked for the royal household for 2 and a half years. When I applied i dropped my application off at the shop, and had a phonecall a couple of hours later but thats pretty unusual and was 3 years ago. To be honest if you have so called 'luxury' customer service experience as you put it you would be able to find work anywhere, I guess youre just holding out for somewhere that sounds a little better.

Harrods should get back to you fairly soon - I worked for them over Christmas and they interviewed me about 3 weeks after applying. I applied for the Royal Household too - still waiting though... It says that it can take up to 6 weeks after the deadline for the applications to go through. Have you thought about trying for Libertys, Asprey, Tiffanys, Smythsons etc? I got interviews for all of them for Christmas, without having past luxury retail experience, so you'd probably walk it. My advice is to phone up and get a name and email address, rather than sending a CV by post/email and waiting for the best. If you want, I can probably find the Liberty's HR person for you, I still have her number somewhere.

You star! I've been looking for a HR/Recruitment site for Tiffanys with no luck :frown: Any ideas where to start?

Ring Tiffanys and ask to be put through to the personnel department. I always reckon it's better to ring than to email anyway. Same applies to all the other companys. Have you tried Fortnum and Mason's? They take loads of people over the sales. Or then there's the big designers, Dior etc. Would really recommend trying Liberty's though.

EDIT: Just spoke to a friend who worked for Links of London last summer, so try them too.

Can I just ask how you applied, because I was thinking of applying too but I have no idea which position to specify etc. I also have a problem in that I have had no previous employment- is this likely to count against me?

Does anyone know how much they pay per hour ~ out of curiosity :P!

has anyone been to an interview here before? what kind of stuff do they ask? x
I'm on the 23rd, slightly inconvenient as it's supposed to be my first day back at uni, but I think the Palace takes priority

They pay about £6.50 per hour, and you work 5 days a week (can be weekends.)

The interview is a group one, they ask you to stand up and present a little thing about yourself, who you are, why you want to work at the palace etc.
Then they give you a dilemma q. to answer, eg. "describe a time you've had to work to a deadline", or "explain a situation where you've been placed under pressure, how did you overcome it" etc. Again this is infront of the group (about 10 ppl)

You then get taken into another room for individual interviews with two of the management, and uniform fitting!!

This is from the interview last year, as far as i know its the same sort of procedure each year, but you may want to ask someone whos had an interview this year!
