I would like to be friends with this man in his mid 50's ive known for years i used to train with him in sports and like his company. He has tried to have a relationship with me though and if he was younger i would want to be romantically involved but the agegap just makes it feel odd to me even though ive always had a crush on him. The think is he doesnt want to be friends or even training buddys (says it would hurt him) so i dont know what to do i would hate to not see him but then i dont want sex either.

If you don't want anything more than friendship, and he only wants more, I think you don't have an option but to not see him any more.

Not an easy situation. With guys the very natural extension of friendship is sex. Only solution is if one or preferably both of you have partners and then it just might work. Watch 'When Harry Met Sally' for some background information..
