Right, it's a showdown between the two basically. The University of Leeds vs The University of Manchester. I'm trying to make a decision but honestly i'm in a dilemma. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent dilemma to have but nevertheless, it's a dilemma which you could help me solve.

Please.

whats the course?

both are v different uni in terms of layout, so a good question maybe to ask whether you want a more campus uni or a city uni this "minor" detail may help you make a decision.

does either uni have accom that you prefer?

:ditto: It's supposed to be going from strength to strength, but of course Leeds is also a good uni, so look at things like course content, teaching methods, assessment, accommodation, campus vs city and distance from home.

Manchester is the better city IMO.

Manchester, hands down. Even if it's for a course like farming.

i think manchester is better... it's a great city to be in!
I would pick manchester. Mostly from reputation and place.

I've visited both...

The Manchester Mathematics department was an utter state... In the lecture theatre we were shown (presumably the best?) there were chairs with padding ripped out, and lots of seats were completely broken away. The paint was peeling from the walls, and the rest of the department was in general disrepair.

The staff were helpful and seemed nice, but the state of the department really didn't set a good impression of the uni as a whole for me.

On the other hand, I thought Leeds was fantastic (from what I saw, anyway).

If you've not visited both, make sure you do before choosing. No one but yourself can make the choice. Sometime you just feel very at home when you're visiting a uni, obviously no-one else can tell you were you'll feel best.

I prefer Manchester's social life over Leeds by a long way.... the city is better overall. Reputation wise they are considered the same by employers (not surprisingly as they are the 'Red Brick universities.') Although I thought the university looked very nice the department I would be studying in was pretty mediocre (Religous study) and hence I chose KCL instead.

Typical response of a 'prestige whore.'

Ah, but Manchester Maths are about to move into a swanky new state-of-the-art building from 2007 so that may be why the old dept was in such a state. The new building looks pretty impressive but, of course, that's no reason to choose a course there....necessarily.....

This is all very well (i'm having the same problem deciding between manchester and leeds to do maths starting 2008) i went to the new maths dept at manchester this week for interview and having been to leeds two days earlier it was gonna take a lot to beat it, and to be honest, i wasn't impressed.

The new building - the Alan Turing Building, at manchester is very clinical. The whole of the inside is white and they have classrooms as opposed to lecture theatres. In addition these classroom have glass walls inside and out so everyone in the main gallery and walking in the street outside can watch what's goin on, this would be a big distraction if you ask me.

Campus wise, manchester is very city, whereas leeds' campus, although just as close to the centre as in manchester, is more confined and has a more comfortable campus feel. Manchester as a city does have a lot more, but for students wanting the university experience i think i'm gonna have to pick leeds.

Plus, the union at leeds is 100 times better than manchester's, always bustleing, more shops bars and resturants. Manchester has the Apollo and MEN, Leeds has the Uni Refectory and the Cockpit and now Rios for gigs, take ur pick.

Oh ye, if anyone reads this, wot they think of Sheffield?

Cheers
i'd pick leeds over sheffield or manchester!!

Is leeds a Campus based uni? And Manchester is a City based uni?
Also is the university of liverpool a campus based university?

Manchester used to have a tower devoted to maths until they knocked it down and are now rebuilding it, might have been why the current maths dept looks so shabby. What you also have to remember when choosing is that Leeds may make claims that it's the third largest city in England, if you include Greater Manchester then theres about 2 million people compared to Leed's 450,000 so if it's size you're goin for go for Manchester, I would.

Leeds only has one campus (I think?) but it's pretty much in the middle of town anyway.

Leeds is amazing. Come to Leeds.
