What's speciation and how are vertebrates and invertebrates classified?

My teacher told us the topics that are in the upcoming test, i'm confused on the two in the title.

vertebrates have a backbone and invertebrates don't? speciation is the formation of new species due to evolution.

thanks, my teacher said that they have to be in a lot of depth .... it is confusing for me :frown:
