I'm currently applying for graduate jobs and this might help other people too, although I think I write a pretty good covering letter, I'd like to know what other people think really works.

What are your best tips for writing a great cover letter? Do you do anything in particular that helps you stand out?

Hi!

What's required in a cover letter of course depends on the role - as far as possible, you want to be looking at the job description, looking at the key words they use, and ensuring that you are matching your skill set and experience to the key points they are looking for in the job description.

In my opinion, the best way to structure a cover letter is as follows:

Paragraph 1: Attention-grabbing introduction
Paragraph 2: Why the company and what requirements?
Paragraph 3: Why are you right for the job?
Paragraph 4: Strong conclusion

For more insight into what makes a strong cover letter, we've written an in-depth article 'The Secret of a Perfect Cover Letter', and we've got plenty more cover letter & CV advice over on Milkround - hope it helps!
