Tonsillitis

Rotten tonsillitis again 2nd time this year:mad: My Go says that I should have them removed, my ENT Consultant says no leave them and treat conservatively, that's all fine for him but, my weight is going down rapidly because I literally can't eat, which is okay when you need to drop a few kgs but not all the time.

So please has anyone any info re alternative therapies etc or some kind of holistic therapy, because at this rate I will be yanking them out myself

If they will let you have them taken out then do it. I get it alot, to the point where I can eat nothing and can't speak, I have it at the moment (albeit quite mild) for the 4th time this year and they still won't take the buggers out.

There is nothing that works for me apart from resting, drinking cool cup-a-soup and hot chocolate and lots of Calpol.

Did you post on the "feeling poorly thread re tonsillitis?

They are such a nuisance, somebody at Uni said that there is a holistic Clinic that has had really good results with alternative therapies, I will pm if you like when she gets back to me?

I expect that you've tried all the old things? Honey and lemon drinks gargling with soluble aspirin etc, have you been given a reason as to why your ENT Consultant will not remove them apart from "it's best not to"?

Apparently they don't like to on people my age, it's also considered cosmetic surgery and unless I prove it affects my life I will have to pay. I also have a really weak immune system and am anemic...so they'd prefer not to operate in anycase.

I've tried alot of things in the past but cause it always seems to go hand in hand with something else nothing seems to work. But I'd be grateful for any more information:smile:

:hugs: Aww, join the club! I'm infected too at the moment, and it's the second time this year (2007), but the 3rd time within the past 9 months.
I'm going to see my GP when I go home to push for them to be taken out, especially now I've discovered that it's the antibiotics that give me depression.

Just use some painkillers to help take the edge away, and drink lots of hot liquids or eat some ice cream - it's a good excuse!
Make sure you stay hydrated too because a dry, infected throat is not nice at all.

When you get it do you sometimes find you also get ear infections?

If you're losing weight because of it, tell your consultant. Having them removed isn't nice though. I had mine removed a while ago on my birthday, spent 3 nights in hospital. :frown:

usually its not actually infected ears, but isntead the tonsils around the eustchian tube (the tube that goes from your throat to ears that equalises the pressure when you swallow) close up the tube. it increases the pressure in your ears making them feel very sore! i know!

but yeh, removing tonsils is a major major thing that isn't done lightly these days. gargle water with a bit of salt and soluble aspirin mixed in (am sure you ahve been told this). it'll REALLY help the pain AND decrease the swelling.

Have you been taking any medication? I was put on anti-biotics and it cleared up within a week. But god i know it hurts!

Don't have your tonsils removed. They are a core part of your immune system.

give them a chance

and.. if they are sore.. they are burning off a nasty infection and preventing that infection from going deeper into your body and doing even more damage.

What the hell do tonsils do? I don't have any!

I had tonsilitis for three and a half months two years ago and I used to get infected so quickly that I'd come home from school fine and by the time I got to going to bed I couldn't breathe or swallow water. I don't think mine were very efficient at fighting stuff. Anyway I ended up having mine removed at 16 because the infection had caused them to grow (I didn't understand this bit) and they were constantly obstructing my airways. The operation itself caned because mine were hard to remove with a larger blood supply than normal and I couldn't eat for 10 days afterwards and lost a stone and 4 lbs!

Tell your doctor that it's affecting your studies, you're losing weight rapidly and you'd like to be referred to a different ENT specialist.

I had it really bad too... unable to move.. pounding headache.. couldn't eat, could hardly drink.. tonsils covered in puss... fevers.. main symptoms had gone within a week but it took me about 3 months to properly recover.

Keep your vitamin C up.. the human body can handle up to 8000mg a day of it.. none of those crappy 50mg tesco pills.

Exactly but when you have that, every few weeks...and if you don't have it you are always getting other peoples manky viruses :frown: Its awful.

just noticed that you're in the smokers soc. :p:

smoking = bad for throat
smoking = depletion of vitamin C already in the body..

maybe you should quit?

Edit: I used to smoke. I loved smoking. I still like the occasional ciggy with a pint.. so I know where'd you be coming from if you didn't want to kick it.

I had recurring tonsillitis for the last couple of years. last year I kept getting it, and as soon as I'd finished my antibiotics and got rid of it, it would come straight back. Not great when I had to do my French speaking exam!! But yeah. Antibiotics were only a temporary solution, and eventually the doctor told me to have them out. Which was all fine and dandy but it took 9 months to get to the top of the waiting list at the hospital.

And about the growing tonsils thing. By the time I'd had tonsillitis on and off for about 6 months, my tonsils were just huge all the time. The consultant said they were the biggest he'd ever seen - and that was when I wasn't infected!!

Oh no big :hugs: for all the victims of tonsil tissue, having just picked up my latest "batch" of antibiotics , the Pharmacist suggested a glycerin and thymol mouthwash and he's correct it's really soothing so maybe that might help others who are at the mercy of their tonsils atm, also 1 gramme Vit C soluble in water seem to be helping as well, so ..... to everyone.

I had my tonsils removed when I was younger, I've been an awful lot better without them. They might be important to your immune system but if they're also making you susceptible to illness, perhaps it's better to take the risk and get rid?
