Nope, not at all.
The reason it is used in things such as boxing is because it seals the wound for a time if you put big gunky chunks of it on.
Edit: With that in mind it is useful for that purpose. If you cannot get it sealed any other way and it looks like it needs serious attention that is not available then I guess it is useful.

Will the wound heal underneat it at all, like a plaster, or will it remain in the same state until the vaseline is removed??

It won't harm the skin at all, though I believe it shouldn't be used on burns, I think it says that on the pot.
The skin will heal well underneath it in the same way as a plaster helps. It stops anything getting to the wound.
