Graduate College Allocation

Hey guys,

I have an essay due in in 4 hours, so to inspire myself I'm thinking about Oxford (offer to study English MSt this year). Does anyone know whether most grads are actually offered their first chocie College, or if it is common to be moved around to fit? To be honest, I don't care where I'm put (I specified New, then Merton on the application) though it's nice to think about all the possible choices! I'll hear in April, so of course there's no actual answer, but it's an interesting time killer for me to ponder on which particular dreaming spire I get to sit under and read

I think it can be really quite hard to predict - so could keep your mind occupied for a while! :p:

At my college (not New or Merton) they ask us when we're in our final undergrad year whether we plan to apply for PG & whether staying here - so if this is widespread (I don't know whether it is?) then number of external grad places might depend on the % on undergrads choosing to stay on, if this system means they're given preference.

Again at mine apparently they have subject targets to try and admit equal numbers of students of different disciplines (Humanities, Law, Medicine and the Natural Sciences) - so from this perspective it could depend on the other decisions made.
& time of application is also relevant to this - they say even well qualified candidates applying late may not get a place.

The grad admissions I know most about are for clinical medics - anecdotally most people seemed to get their first choice. But there was sometimes an element of strategy about where to apply to & in what order! So this may have been self selecting & some people did end up being placed elsewhere.

Do undergrad students at Oxford get special consideration for post grad work??
I applied for entry in 2006 and got an offer, but unfortunatley missed my chem grade so was rejected. Took up my insurance offer and I'm thinking of applying for post grad work in biological sci.... I know that it will be very competitive, but just wondered if the current students get special preference?

No, they don't.
