Low Grades/Rejections/Apply For Health Sciences/ Extra or Clearing The Answer?

For Extra and Clearing can you apply for health sciences as in (medicine, dentistry?) Will they even have any spare places?

When I applied for UCAS I applied for 4 dentistry options and the other two were left blank. Due to my low grades and bad predictions I was anticipating rejections. I have had them. Now I haven't given up yet, and I have not even re-sat the year, so I still have a chance to get those grades for the subjcts Maths (want to get a overall B), Chemistry (want to get a overall B), English Literature (if my ridiculous college 'allows' to submit my c/w I want to aim for a A grade)

Now that's the grades I'm dreaming to get - my current grade says otherwise ¬_¬ I believe I can get it. I know medicine/dentistry want staright A grades, even if I do get my aspirations will I still have a chance to go Uni this year and apply for those courses through either Cearing or Extra?

Please reply, because I genuinly am stuck in a bit of mud. Pluck me out of here!

Reply 1

I dont think that they ever go to clearing.

Try asking in the dentistry forum.

Reply 2

No offence, but:

- their places are likely to be filled up

- if the Unis want straight As, but are willing to overlook a few grade slips, then they will probably start by taking students that they had already accepted who missed a grade or two, so will probably still be full up after results day

- students who applied for Dentistry, were predicted the required straight As and who had good enough applications/interviews to be offered a place are unlikely to drop grades by 2 (i.e. A to C), so it's unlikely that there will be enough origianally accepted applicants that end up with grades lower than yours.

Looks bleak, but first of all, there's still the chance that originally accepted applicants don't drop grades too much, but drop the essential grades, creating a space for you [assuming you at least have As in the essential subjects (biology I'm guessing)]. Also, it will do no harm to enter clearing anyway, and then take a gap year, see if you can improve your grades further (or do different A Levels intensive) and then go to Uni next year.

Sorry for long post, I'm in one of those moods! Good luck by the way!

1. Don't panic. Take a nice, deep breath. Exhale. Better now?
2. Your options are decidedly limited. There are no dentristy courses in extra and only 1 "true" medicine degree, so I'm also going to include medicinal-related and dentistry-related incase you wanted to "expand your horizons".

Thank you for your "realistic" views. I will consider every option that there is:

Xtra, Clearing, or even taking a gap year to improve grades. It's been really hard on me and is difficult to describe how I feel put in a position like this - I realize that I am not the only person going through this dilemma. What ever the outcome may be I just want to go university and most importantly study the course I most want to study.

I will let you know of my progress. Much obliged.

Reply 6

I have to say I agree with what what my learned friend, The Rt. Hon Gentleman above this box said.

Althought my situation is different from yours I started in the same ****. I got almost straight A*s at GCSE but then completley lost interest at A-level in every subject I took apart from English. I ended up getting A for English Language A for A English Lit (took it a year late as an AS), E for Physics (I slept as my fellow students worked through the final exam!) and I didn't even take maths..oh and B for A-level Critical Thinking. (ABEa)

Anyway, despite having ****ty A-level grades I got into a law school in the top 15 (Times league tables) didn't like it- Law is dull and now I have a unconditional to do English at York (top 4.) I realise English is easier to get on to than Medicine/ Dentistry but Law probably is just as hard. I'm a firm believer that not all Universities (despite what the first poster said) are looking for straight A's at A-level, but someone who is truly enthusiastic and has the drive most other people don't. If you can take a year out, do some good work. exp' and write a compelling statement, explaining your college was **** you could do fine.

If you don't feel like taking a year out theres always Bio'chem and all the subjects that guy mentioned. I have a friend who started with Bio'chem and did a conversion course.

Conclusion- You're not bummed yet! Good luck!

Reply 7

Sorry to be pessimistic, but with your 'dream' grades being ABB with Bs in chemistry and maths and you not having biology, I don't think medicine or dentistry is going to happen. I doubt either will be in Extra/Clearing anyway, and even if they were, there are plenty of students with straight As in all the required subjects who get rejected, so you'd be competing with them for offers. If you really want to go to uni this year, consider some of the other related courses that have been mentioned, but if you really want to do medicine/dentistry, resit your A-levels next year, pick up biology and reapply. Bear in mind that some medical schools won't accept resit candidates though.

Reply 8

Ditto what Kellywood said. ABB certainly doesn't qualify for medicine, since the requirements will either be AAA or AAB. Not too sure about dentistry, but I suspect it's the same. Taking a gap year is a possible option, but many of the med schools don't like resit students, unless there's an extenuating circumstance. They also require you to attain very high grades upon resit. You could apply for a BSc in something like medicinal chemistry, then apply for med post graduate. Or I suppose you could look at european unis.

You know what? I looked back in the archives and found a thread that may just be what you need. Give it a look-see, yeah?
