Writing an essay help?

So I've just started my first assignment at University. I have to write an essay, how do I format it though?

Do I state the positives then negatives and then draw a conclusion?

e.g.
Positive point 1
Positive point 2

Negative Point 1
Negative Point 2

Or

Do I state a positive and then state a negative to the positive? And keep doing this until I've ran out of positives and negatives then draw a conclusion?

E.g.

Positive point 1 but the negative to this point is...

Which way is better?
I'd say the first way. Makes it clear you're attempting to give a balanced argument. If a good point has a bad side or vice versa, feel free to include it in the same section, but try to make it apparent that there are two halves i.e. positive and negative.

Thank you for your help! I used to do it the first way when I was writing assignments but the University question threw me off :frown:
