UCE vs Aston vs Bham vs Wolverhampton

This is your chance to tell the world what you truly think of the four major West Midlands universities - UCE, Aston, Bham and Wolverhampton! Simply post your opinion below, whether you be a current or future student, or even somebody with other experience of what either of the Universities are actually like.

However, as a prospective first year Undergraduate aiming for the UCE, I have been rapidly posted with criticisms regarding the UCE. From my perspective, the University seems to have very good teaching staff and academic support personnel, where rumours of the surrounding area (Perry Barr) seem to have mirred the fact that, as in any major city or area, if you cause trouble you receive trouble - if you're no doubt a mature student you will be fine getting to and from the University, nice and peacefully!

But let's hear your views on the Universities! Post your votes even, comment, give your own opinion or back up your favourite!

Thank you for your time.

Yes how could I forget those two?! Two of the UK's finest universities. But I suppose living in Walsall we only ever think of four - nearest to our doorstep!

Coventry is one of the UK's finest? Reminds me of a certain Blackadder Goes Forth joke.

well heres my tuppence!!

started of at UCE and hated it..partly to do with living in the heights private accomadtion instead of halls, but thats was out of my hands. perry bar is rough, during freshers week at teh student bar on numerous occasions did a group of asians not from the uni come down and start trouble. asthetically the uni isnt that nice either..HOWEVER i transfered to birmingham uni and can say that i love it hear, theres a better atmosphere whilst at campus, loovly student village and open green campus. i really cant compare the two as for me, bham wins hands down (THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS, IM NOT HAVIN A GO OR ANYTHING)

In terms of overall reputation, this is how I would rate them.

1. Warwick - Very good, and very hard to get into.
2. Birmingham - One of the redbricks, and probably in the top 10 or 15 in the country.
3. Aston - Very focussed university. Good programs in engineering, pharmacy and very good business school which is starting to get noticed in the rankings. Known for its links with industry, and the fact that most students go on industrial placements.
4. Coventry - Decent, has a good program in automobile/motorsport (?) engineering as it has good links with the car companies in the area. Not really heard too many good things other than that.
5. UCE - I've heard good things about the staff and support extended to students, but the overall reputation is very poor. Most people who go there can't get into their first choice and usually go as a backup.
6. Wolverhampton - Haven't really heard too much about them, which is why they come last

All IMO of course
The big 3:

Warwick, Aston, Birmingham

How do you feel about the student facilities on offer at each of these unis? Are you impressed or do you feel a bit let down? How do you feel about the union/guild at your uni and the entertainment it offers? If you dont mind being quoted please also add your first name, age, uni, course, & where you are orginially from. Thanks everyone!
Warwick, Birmingham then Aston.

I intended to go to Warwick, but they've rejected me :frown: So I am now at Brum!

I have no regrets about University of Birmingham. It's an all-rounder university; fantastic campus, heritage, very good reputation, brilliant and flexible people, and a superb social life!

It would depend on which course you were looking to study. Wolverhampton, Coventry and BCU(UCE) are all ex polytechnics, not that that automatically means they're rubbish. I wouldn't want to live in at BCU though. Perry Barr is pretty depressing! :frown:
I applied to Warwick and Birmingham (Aston doesn't do the course I want anyway). Had AAB offers from both but will be firming with Birmingham as I like the campus, the department and the course better.

can i ask what people know or think is a the best uni out of BCU, Aston and Birmingham for mechanical engineering.

i keep getting mixed replies about which is better, though i thought aston was the best for this subject.

Im not too bothered about which has the best building and campus and what not, i know all that already, i just purely want to know which has the better course or is more respected by employers?

any thoughts will be apprieciated.

Aston are known for their strengths in the sciencey side of things so i would probably say Aston as they will have the stronger departments and so employers in that field will recognise the quality of Aston, over Birmingham which is probably what others are saying becuase it has a higher overall reputation but not on the department level
