Bristol is a very cosmopolitan and culturally diverse city - you're going to find narrow minded people everywhere so it is impossible to say 'Is Bristol racist'...

In Freshers, everybody talks to everybody else and I never sensed any form of racism or prejudice. Apparently one of the biggest societies at the Union is the Asian Cultural Society and there's a Racial Minorities Officer who can help with any racism issues. This information is widely available on the University/UBU website (and easily google-able )

In all honesty though, asking whether a major UK city is racist is a pretty silly question... It's like asking, 'How long is a piece of string.'

I don't know about that - there's certainly some cities where there is more racial tension than others...

But on the whole, AngelHarpist got it right; Bristol's a culturally diverse city, and I don't think you'll have many problems.
I wondered about demographics before I applied, but when I visited the city in February, my colour seemed like a non-issue. Everyone I spoke to was friendly and helpful.

(I Agree with both Angelharpist and Rui)

Bristol IS very white middle class, but that is not at all an indication of racism. Bristol will have its racists but I'm sure the majority of students don't think race is an issue. I live in Bristol and have lots of friends at the uni who get on with lots of non-white students.

P.S. The girl from shipwrecked who wants to bring back slavery and thinks black people are disgusting is going to Bristol next year. Its nothing to generalise with of course, but it is a point to bear in mind.

Oh yeah, I heard that she was coming here. She's not doing much for Bristol's reputation, is she? Oh well, I guess you'd get people like that at any university.

Well i live in manchester, which has its fair share of whites and non whites...Anyways, thanks for the info/advice etc. btw when i say asian i mean indians, pakistanis chinese etc

Hahaha that girl is from york (like me) and york is no way racist. Anyway its stupid to try and generalise a city the size of bristol like that. When i went on the open day everything was fine and i am not white. Just relax about these things because i am sure that at university, where you are srrounded by smart(ish) people, race will not be an issue.

I didn't realize racism was common in Manchester. That's sad - I thought it was mainly confined to the **** holes that are Bradford and Oldham these days.

Well Oldham's basically Manchester really, isn't it.
The only racism i have seen is Asian people not wanting to mix with anyone else- my flatmate refuses to talk to anyone in our flat other than the other Asian guy we live with. Other than that, I haven't seen ANY racism at all. People will probably go out of their way to accommodate you.

I have noticed clique-y behaviuor like that from some groups, but then again, generally this isn't the case with asians, or whatever group you chose to pick.

I've heard Bristol is fairly open-minded. Just be yourself and try and ignore any racism. Wherever you go for University, you will find racism.
I havent seen any racism at all here.

The only person who ever said that to me, in a joking way mind, was Guido at Tesco.

Just to echo what others have said I've not seen any racism, but Bristol undoubtedly is very white and middle class.
