Badminton Skin Cut

Every time i play badminton, i always seem to have skin coming off from the hand i play with, i do not know why,i think it maybe the grip i am using to hold a badminton racquet. Today at the bottom of my index finger i lost a bit of skin and i couldn't play my normal game because it would hurt when i smashed the badminton shuttle, last time skin came off my little finger and i couldn't grip a racquet without hurting. Is there anything i can do next time to not have this type of minor injury?
Thanks for replies.

How are you holding your racquet? I played badminton for four years and never had that problem. Have you been playing for a while?

it's hard to describe, but i think i may hold it like a hammer, i've only played badminton half a dozen of times

Maybe you're holding the racquet too tightly? Might also be the grip - Consider getting a new grip if the current one is causing problems.

Yeah, you're not supposed to hold it too hard. The way I was taught to do it was to hold it out flat like a frying pan, but hold it loose enough that if there was a pancake on it or something you could flip it.

Basically, you've got to hold it loose enough so you can "spring" it up and down in your hand. Badminton's not about power, it's about hitting the shuttlecock right in the middle of the strings, so you don't need to grip the racquet hard.

The grips are made extra "grippy" for this reason, which is why your hands are hurting when you hold it too tight.

thanks for the comment, i also hold it near the bottom of the handle, does that affect it?
you probably don't have a nice, soft on the hands, grip. If not, replace.

Well, I'd recommend holding it near the bottom. Gives you more range on your swing.
The the lower you hold it, the harder it is to get a good powerful swing.

In tennis maybe, but badminton isn't about the power of the swing.

Not in tennis and not in badminton.

what about control? which is better near bottom of handle or not near bottom?

control, in what sense do you mean??

when i play, my grip obviously changes according to what shot is required, but my hand never moves up to the top of the handle. It's always on the lower half of the grip, which is where it should be!

i take it you're of 'beginner' standard?

yeah, probably beginner

ok, as far as the skin problem is concerned, how soft is your grip?? If its worn out, you obviously need to replace it.

and how heavy is your badminton racquet??

grips don't cost much, get something nice and soft, and you should have fewer problems. Maybe because you don't play racquet sports that often, is because you're finding yourself contending with these problems. I've played racquet sports for as long as i can remember, particularly badminton and tennis, so your hands get used to grips etc...for long periods of game play etc...

i use a carlton titanium powerblade racquet. I don't know how to answer how soft is the grip. i've only used racquet 4-5 times, it's still near brand new.

The grip shouldn't be too bad then
The power doesn't come from the swing, it's from the entire movement; so when you swing your body around when doing the serve it provides the power from all the muscles used. So you don't need to grip so hard
Also White_haired_Wizard said you hold it at the bottom then the grip varies. I got taught that on the side of the grip -the slimmer side - you make a v shape with you thumb and index finger and then the rest of your fingers grip around the rest of the grip.
I'm not sure whether that made much sense
Have fun playing, it's a fab sport and shouldn't hurt

well, the type of grip changes when the shot changes...

you don't use the same grip the whole time!!!
