Q) Explain why the combined effect of reduced oxygen and increased metabolic rate would pose a serious problem for organisms such as daphnia.

I know that the heart rate would increase in order to pump more blood around the body to compensate for the decreased oxygen levels but I'm not quite sure about the metabolic rate bit...

It says combined effect, so this is what I assume:

- Increased metabolic rate = greater rate of respiration.
- Oxygen is needed as the terminal electron acceptor in the ETC.
- Not enough Oxygen available, therefore causes oxygen debt.

There is probably a lot more to it, but the question seems quite ambiguous.
How many marks is the question?

It doesn't say how many marks it is unfortunately...
The first bit of the question said 'oxygen becomes less soluble in water as temperature rises'

Well based on the fact that Daphnia is an ectohermic organism, it's metabolism is directly dependent on the temperature of the environment.

As the external temperature increases, Daphnia's metabolism will increase as well which brings a higher demand for oxygen to the cells for respiration. However, like you said, oxygen becomes less soluble in warmer conditions so that's the problem.
