I want to become an Air Hostess

Ok, as a young child i've always wanted to become an air hostess but my parents and family are always telling me how i shouldnt be one, that the money is crap, and its not all its cracked up to be
but still, i wanna be an Air hostess
but then i feel as though i shouldnt because of my family, and they are all expecting me to go to university because i go to a grammar school, i feel as though i would be letting them down

anyway i was wondering what people thought, should i just ignore what my family think and do what i want? and if it is a mistake, my mistake to llearn from?

its life, live it how you will. if you fall pick yourself up, why would you want your family to make all your desions

if you do something because someone else wants you to then you wont be happy, try doing what you have always wanted to do, its not the end of the world if you try it and dont like it you can always go back to study then .

are you tall? because if you're not, you can't be one anyway...

If you have thought about it and want to give it a go, then go for it. Talk to your parents about it. There's nothing to stop you going back to study in a few years if it doesn't work out - and in any case, uni isn't for everyone.

If it's what you want to do, go for it.

Pure interest, why is this in H & R though???
Up until recently my partner was cabin crew for BA. Regardless of what your family expects remember its your life at the end of the day.

However to give you the other side of the promotional crap from the likes of BA/BMI and Virgin I tell you about my partners experience of being cabin crew for 1 year before she quit last month,

I'll highlight some of the bad points:
1. Yes the money is shocking, basic for a entry level eurofleet at BA (which is considered one of the better paying) is £10,500 pa. You of course get your allowences, but they arent all that,
2. You work a variety of shifts, which you dont get a say over, no matter what they tell you in FSTE (First Steps to Excellence Training). You can find yourself having to check in at 5am and then not finishing a long day until 9pm that night. Unless of course you get a stop over.
3. To earn good money you'll need to work between 45 - 50 hours per week. And even then you'll need to do Geneva's, Moscow's, Athens and all of the other good routes where the expenses are good. A week of flying Heathrow - Paris or Heathrow - Barcelona wont get good money.
4. Sickness, if your ill once your called in for a "talk" and when you call in you are more or less "ordred" to come to work, even though they tell you that you cant fly if you arent well.
5. If your female DO expect to be oggled (is that even a word) by the uncultured and morons that fly. Despite what the airlines might say sexual harrasment is common in the airline industry. If your male, well thats another story,
6. Its a very bitchy / clicky industry, you annoy one person or disagree with them then expect mates of theirs who you fly with to make your life difficult.
7. It is lonely. You'll spend the majority of stop overs in your hotel room, ordering room service and going to bed more or less as soon as you arrive if its a late one.
8. If you dont like it then you cant transfer within the company for 2 years, the only way is to quit. You cant transfer to operations etc.

Good points.
1. Yes you get to travel to different countries
2. Yes you get to meet interesting people
3. You can get to Barcelona at 9am and have the whole day there and have a night stop.
4. You can earn upwards of £1700 per month if you are willing to put the hours in
5. There are benefits like staff travel etc.

Thats all I can think of for now, let me know if you have any other questions.

My housemate wants to be a manual labourer, but came to uni because his parents told him to basically.

He's not unhappy here, he appreciates that bcause he went to uni he's always got the option of being a manual worker or anything which requires a degree.

What I'm saying is - it's better to endure 3 years and keep your options open. You may not want to be an Air Hostess in 5/10 years time, and without going to uni your options will be far more limited.

Good luck.

my word, has the brains to go to uni but wants to be a manual labourer, I find that odd.

its not all its cracked up to be

I wasn't aware it was ever 'cracked up to be' anything. I'm pretty sure it mostly consists of being a waitress but in cramped conditions and in a place where people are more likely to be irritable and to throw up.

What is it specifically that draws you to doing it? If it's the travelling aspect then perhaps look into something else, you only get to see airports and hotels as an air hostess, it's not like you get to explore exotic places. Maybe even look in to being a commercial pilot?

Apparently you have to take on certain health risks as well... flying in the air means you're exposed to much higher levels of radiation than on ground level. That means increased risk of cancer. Here's a BBC report:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/380274.stm

That's one of the reasons why infants and pregnant women are recommended not to fly...

I know flight attendants with big airline companies and it's hard work. Honest. Plus you get molested a lot.

Well you have take 1 yrs diploma from Air Hostess Academy. They are place in you very good airlines.
Reply 13
You might need to be fluent in a language or two other than English as well, but that depends on the airline.

The majority of these vacancies don't list GCSE requirements. One vacancy said GCSE in Maths and English needed, but no grades. I didn't think it mattered.
