on the gcse aqa non calculator paper, there was a question which instructed to leave the answer as a square root. the answer was root 125. which i simplified to 5 root 5. is 5 root 5 a square root or a surd. if it is a surd do you think i will be marked down for it?

5√5 is a surd, √125 is a square root unsuprisingly!

If you have √125 as an answer somewhere in the calculation then you'll probably get the marks i guess.

yeah square root or surd, you did all the working that was necessary, the main thing is that they didnt want you to write a bunch of decimals, probably cos it looks untidy and as they are irrational never actually represent the actuall answer
